I've come seeking knowledge from my fellow high roaders.
I was at my local Walmart today buying ammo, when on a whim I decided to look at a mossberg 930. I've been wanting an auto loading shot gun for a while now. It will be for hd and just plinking.
The price on it was 399$. I fondled it a while and liked the ergos, the saftey location and the black synthetic stock. I then went to my lgs to see what he could get it for because I try to support my lgs.
He said for me to jump on it because 480 was the best he could do. When I told him it was at Walmart, the other worker jumps in and says," don't do it". I ask why and he says well "its the Walmart version", they cut corners to get Walmart "specials" at such a good price. Is this true? Am I getting a better gun for 80 extra dollars through my lgs instead of the "Walmart version"? I really like and want the mossberg 930, but also want the best deal. Is the whole Walmart version thing I was told bs?

Walmart and all the other "box stores" get their guns from the same distributors that your local gun shop does..

There might be "special" SKU's, but if you look at the stock number, an 85225 is an 85225 no matter where they buy it from...

Compare the "buying power" of your LGS...might re-sell say 50 Mossbergs a year, while if you add up sales in ALL the Wal-marts, probably several thousand a year.

So, guess which store get the best price from the distributors?

I currently work the gun counter at a walmart. It is the same 930 as the lgs gets. $399 is a great price, The 930 I have in stock is $499, but I live in MD and gun prices are always higher here.

Walmart has enough buying power, that sometimes there are special runs of a model sold exclusively by Walmart. Other than that, they sell the exact same guns everybody else does.
