Mossberg ATR 100 30'06 Reviews?

Saw one of these for a low low price at WalMart and didn't know what to make of it (deal or just cheap?). Thanks!

First I have heard about a problem with the ATR-100 series.

I have one in .30-06. Will hold well under 2"@100Yds in my hands with most cheap commercial soft-point ammo. Shooting Budd got a smidge under 0.7"@100Yds 5-shots with Federal Gold Medal Match ammo.
 
I've got one and this is the first i've heard of this. I did manage to chip a piece from the molded-in swivel stud, when firing the rifle with a swivel stud-mounted bipod (that's my stupid fault for using equipment outside of its intended purpose).
 
Hopefully there is just a small batch with the problem, but I'm too fond of my head to take chances( even ugly as it is). But I'm still eyeballing one, I'm just waiting to see what comes out of this.
 
I own one in 30.06 and it is a fine rifle.
Neg:
-I did break the front swivel stud when using a Harris type bipod but that was quickly fixed by drilling a hole just below it and mounting a strong swivel screw.
-The trigger also has a little bit if creep.
Pros:
-I have fired well over 400+rounds, many of them my reloads, and never had any problems.
-The rifle is accurate enough, about 2 MOA.
-And for $250.00 out the door, can't really be beat.

never heard or experienced the other problems mentioned on the links.
 
That's why I'm spooked. I didn't mean to scare anybody unnecessary but there's nothing holding that thing together.:what:
 
Given the seriousness of the problem (although probably a small %), I'd look at the Marlin XL7 or XS7 or a Stevens.
 
It's dated from December, not so long ago, but there's really not much of a trail on the internet about these incidents. The ATR-100 dates from about 2005 and has pretty good acceptance as a low-cost rifle, but of course, a manufacturing problem can start in any factory, any time.
 
Even without the "bolt in the face" issues I cannot see any reason to recommend the Mossberg. It is simply the 3rd reincarnation of the old Raptor rifle that has always been viewed as sub-par. It has died off twice only to be brought back by another company trying to make a quick buck.

There are plenty of good rifles out there with good reputations for reliability, accuracy and safety that sell for about the same or less. The Mossberg offers nothing that the other brands do not offer.
 
I bought my Mossberg 100 in .270 and have not experienced any problems with it. It took a while to find a load that worked well in it, but once I found it, I'm very happy with it's performance. I'm not a particularly good shot and I can put them within 1.5 inch.

Given the price out the door, I'm happy with it.
 
I did a review of mine a couple of years ago. Still shoot it and it's consistant with Federal Power Shok ammo (the cheap soft points) .75 to just over 1" 3 shot groups all the time.

I figured if there were any gross negligent design flaws ending-up with the kind of mishaps described elsewhere, there would be firsthand accounts of them on this site. The closest we've come is someone having read them, reposted the link, and remaining cautious (nothing wrong with that). I have to come clean and say when I started this thread I had already bought one, having been unable to resist a 30'06 for $250. :D Hey, I now have that base covered for poquito dinero, and everybody with an informed opinion on this rifle on this site has had good things to say.
 
It's just a cheap gun. And, possibly more than with any other industry, with guns you get what you pay for. Even without the safety issue, it's got a cheap hollow plastic stock, sub-par trigger pull, and an all-around cheap finish. Yes, cheap guns will shoot deer just fine. But why dump your money into one when a bigger investment spaced out over the next 20 years will get you something good?
 
Who's to say I won't?

I had the opportunity, I had the wherewithal, now I have what most consider a pretty decent arm (especially when considering price).
