ive had a kinda crazy idea. i have a sks barrel laying around as well as a extra mossberg 500 barrel. ive seen and used the 12 gauge shell adapters for .357 magnum. my crazy idea is what about making a full length adapter with the sks barrel. use aluminum spacers and create a insert and press fit in the whole sks barrel.

would the 7.62x39 cartridge be too much for the mossberg boltface? what is the pressure from a .357 magnum, and whats the pressure from a 7.62x39?

am i missing anything important?

Strength

The boltface isn't where the problem lies. it's in the breech...specifically, the locking system. It's proofed to withstand the forces and pressures generated by a shotshell...not a centerfire rifle. The .357 Magnum may be a possibility...but it would be wise not to go into it blind.

1911tuner,

thank you for the reply. i know the .357 magnum is no problem at all because ive used the shell adapters and run thru more than one box of .357 with it. i had not thought of the locking mechanism strength. i had figured that if the kick of a 12 gauge slug wouldnt break the mechanism then a 7.62x39 recoil wouldnt either.

Slugs

It *probably* wouldn't...but it would be best to do some research on the subject. Somewhere out there...somebody has tried it. A wise man once said:

"There's nothing that you can prove with a gun that hasn't already been proven."

And:

"The pressure required to acelerate a 150-grain bullet to 3,000 fps in 20 inches of barrel is more than enough to blow your eyes through the back of your head."

...Or something to that effect...

Better to know than to guess and go, bro.;)

Nominal pressure

of a 12ga shotshell is between 9,000 and 15,000 lup (compare to per sq. inch)
a 357 mag probably runs in the vicinity of 35,000 cup (compare to per sq. inch)
a 7.62 X 39 has a SAAMI pressure limit of 53,000 cup make your own conclusions my friend but I wouldn't do it on a bet.

wow. thats a big difference. dang, i guess that kills my project idea.

thank you for the info.
