i know some people have opinions on guns that are a simple "must have" for any shooting enthusiast. a ruger 10/22 is a good example of this. i have some money from income taxes that i can spend on a gun, nothing outrageous i need to put some away. anyway let me list my guns, and you guys give your opinions on what must have gun/cartridge i am missing.

mosin nagant 7.62x54R
chinese SKS 7.62x39
marlin bolt action .22lr rifle
mossberg 500 pump 12ga with slug and bird barrels
smith and wesson m&p 40

my mosin is crazy accurate. its a great rifle. ive got the rat tat tat/shtf shoot up pumpkins thing taken care of with the sks, also in great shape. i mentioned 10/22 but i dont want another .22 rifle just yet. i dont need another shotgun, this one does it all. and ive got a great side arm with the .40 S&W (see my post about shooting it 100 yds)

Point is, what genre of firearm dont i have covered, thats not outrageously priced like a .50bmg?

Not too many honest must haves, but there are a few...
Vintage S&W mod 36 or 60
Colt Python
Colt 1911
a Wundernine of your favorite make & model w/ mags
30-06 bolt gun
Garand
M1A / preferably M-14
223 black gun - AR15 or HK 93
10-22
S&W 617

i should have mentioned why i dont want to buy a 30-06. its a remington model 760 gamemaster. pump action 30-06. it is my uncles. i am only "borrowing" it, but i think its his way of giving it to me making sure i dont sell it. i dont consider it "my" gun though, i can however shoot it when i want, and it stays at my house. which at this point rules out anything else that shoots a 30-06. not that i wouldnt get on my knees and beg for an M1 Garand, i just cant justify it right now.

i dont have the money for the ar ive been wanting. i guess what im leaning toward is a hefty DA revolver. maybe in .357 mag, or .44 mag since i can shoot the specials too.

are .44 specials really that much cheaper than .44mag, or just easier to handle?

Revolver

I don't see a revolver or a .30-30 on that list anywhere.

You might want to get that seen to.

Or you could do a revolver/carbine companion set in either .44 mag or .357 mag.

Recommend either Ruger or S&W for the revolver; Marlin for the carbine.

I agree you should look into a .357 Magnum revolver and/or a 30-30 Lever rifle.

Both are a lot of fun to shoot and have practical uses too. The .44 Spl ammo isn't much cheaper than .44 Mag rounds but .38 Spl ammo are considerable cheaper than .357 Mag ammo. 30-30 ammo isn't that expensive either compared to some of the other "hunting" calibers and easily available too.

Lets see something in 308 Win , 223Rem/5.56 Nato , 9 mm , 38 spl , 32 ACP , 45 ACP , 357 Mag ....uh you get the picture

M1 Garand, AR or AK, good .357, .44 mag or .45LC revolver, and a 1911 were my personal "must haves" that you dont already have. .357 blackhawk bought first (but later sold in college to afford books :(), 1911 came next, then .44 mag Redhawk, then my WASR-10, and finally (for some odd reason, as it's the one I've always wanted the most, and for the longest time :banghead: ) my CMP M1 Garand. Also have the .357 magnum revolver covered now with and inherited nickle Colt Trooper.

A 1911 and a Garand. Must have (for me).
Then start saving for an M1A, and keep your eyes peeled for an 03. Both are a close second tier below the above.
Once those are there, an AR15. Mind you, these EBRs come in many flavors and designs, so one is just a start.

There are no "must have" guns. Buy what you want, when you want it/can afford it. If I were in your position and possessed your collection, I'd look to add an FAL.

"There are no "must have" guns."

You don't think a firearm weapon for home defense is necessary? Do you only bow hunt, a firearm is generally necessary to hunt ducks, pheasant, etc.

I'll give you the fact that deer can be taken with a bow, but a gun is "must have" for firearms deer season.

You do not have the right to carry in your state, so a personal sidearm must not be a "must have" either?

I'm glad I don't live in Milwaukee.

You don't think a firearm weapon for home defense is necessary?

For the vast majority of the people in the US, no, a firearm for home defense is not necessary. Those that want one for that purpose are welcome to have one.

Do you only bow hunt, a firearm is generally necessary to hunt ducks, pheasant, etc.

I haven't hunted anything but good deals in a number of years. What's the original post got to do with hunting?

I'll give you the fact that deer can be taken with a bow, but a gun is "must have" for firearms deer season.

Outstanding use of logic

You do not have the right to carry in your state, so a personal sidearm must not be a "must have" either?

Does your state issue your "rights", or does it issue you a permit to carry?

I'm glad I don't live in Milwaukee.

Most of Wisconsin is not Milwaukee.

Just for clarification, I'll repost the critical part of my post, and bold it for emphasis

Buy what you want, when you want it/can afford it.

Lots of good suggestions already!!

-22lr handgun either a revolver or semi-auto would fill a niche for you. Cheap and fun practice.
-a good quality .357magnum would fill a niche for you. Everyone should have at least one .357mag revolver since you can load light .38spcl through heavy .357magnum ammunition as you desire.
-concealed carry semi or revolver.
-you can't go wrong with a good quality .30-06. I don't know if you hunt or not but a bolt action .308 or .30-06 would round out your collection.

The ultimate collection in my opinion is:
handguns:
-concealed carry revolver (S&W J frames like model 60, Ruger SP101 etc)
-concealed carry semi auto (tons of choices here, maybe Sig 232 or a compact 9mm)
-full or mid sized revolver (38 spcl through 357mag)
-full or mid sized semi auto (9mm and up to 45acp)
-22lr revolver
-22lr semi auto
-large caliber revolver 44spcl and up
-single action revolver

Rifles:
-22lr rifle
-bolt action mid caliber scoped rifle for hunting/target shooting (.30-06, .308 etc)
-reliable semi auto rifle in mid caliber (example SKS, M1 Garand, M1A)

Shotgun:
-Pump action with bird and slug barrels for hunting, trap, skeet, clays

Good luck!!

Jim

You should probably have a couple of wheel guns. Me, I'm partial to the S&W revolvers in .44mag, .357 and .38. Nothing fancy, just one of each caliber.

Definitely have a couple of .22s running around the vault. A pistol and a rifle each would be best.

A bolt action rifle of some sort, or many bolt guns of some sort. .30-06 is my primary, and I have a couple in other calibers as well. A 7mag, .300 winmag and even a .270. Use those as hunting rifles only

You should maybe have a lever gun in the closet, too. A .30-30 marlin or even a .45-70 Guide Gun.

Shotguns? What's your flavor. I like to hunt all kinds of birds and have a 12 and 20 guage for that purpose. I also have a HD shottie and a 3-gun capable shottie. Others like to collect, and shotguns are beautiful as they are unique in every way. Side by side, over under, pump and semi-auto. Whatever floats your boat.

I think milsurp/C&R is a special side category that lots of people are now getting into. Mausers, Mosins and Enfields, oh my. Many to choose from and it doesn't hurt to research and see what strikes your fancy. I have a Mk 4 Enfield rifle and plan on collecting more of the different variants.

Battle Rifles are another thing to have in the collection. I have an AR, getting an AK soon, and own a G3 clone. That is my bread and butter collecting fancy. Like a woman in a shoe store, I wanna see every pair ever made. I probably won't stop until I am either dead, dying or dismembered by my wife for my out of control spending habits.

Semi-auto pistols rounds out the list. Most camps split between traditional (1911) and tactical tupperware (Glock et. al). My test is "form, fit and function". If it works well and fits my hand I like it. I have eclectic tastes that go from Springfield XD to Kimber and back to Sig and beyond.

That's just me and how I view collecting must have firearms.

Don't get much more American than a SA revolver in 45 Long Colt. Fun too...
It'll take down a vicious bear, rampagin' savages, drunk bounty hunters and a Gray if he decides to flex his ET muscles.
Mine has accounted for 1000s of empty but hostile beer cans.

Biker:)

If I had to scale back, this is probably the bare minimum I'd go with:

.22 pistol, preferably auto.
centerfire revolver - probably .357 mag
centerfire auto - I couldn't do without my Hi Power, but a 1911 would suffice - common caliber, but brand/style not as important
.22 rifle
smaller centerfire rifle - .223, or something
larger centerfire rifle - .30-'06 would be my choice
12 ga. shotgun

I'd probably cry if I had to cut back to that, though.

A revolver chambered in .357 Magnum (so many versitile loads for it)
A lever action carbine (Say Marlin 1894) in a solid caliber like 30-30
A pistol in .22 for cheap plinking/practice/teaching others
Something small in .380
Something big in .45
And one good "reach out and touch" rifle (Your 760 covers that if it has a good scope on it).

I'd probably also add a Remington 870 just because that seems to be the American thing to do :D

I would say:

M-1 Carbine, these are just fun to plink with and anyone can handle the rifle

Enfield No. 4 MK 1, These soft shooting bolt actions are some of the smoothest rifles around.

Swiss K-31, Straight pull bolt action kicks ass.

Revolver: I don't care what caliber, there's something cool about a wheelgun!

Tube-fed Semi-auto .22 rifle. Forget the bolt action .22 the Semi-Auto is where it's at!

You need a 1911, not only the American tradition but in many gun circles the discussion is not if you have a 1911 but what kind you have, thats a sign we should all have one.
