I'm considering getting the Mossberg, 2 barrel combo that Big 5 is always running. I think it comes with an 18.5 inch barrel and 26 inch barrel. I have a couple of questions. For reference, I think they normally run this setup for $279.99.

Is this just a standard Mossberg 500/500a? Is there any difference between this and buying just the Mossberg, outside of this combo?

I assume both barrels are smoothbore. Anybody know for sure?

I'm mainly choosing this over the Remmy 870 due to the price and convenience of having both lengths of barrels. I understand both to be excellent shotguns, so I don't think this is a problem. I know the 870 has a diehard following, and if they both gave the same items for the same price, I'd choose the Remmy, but the Moss is so much cheaper for what you get. Is the 870 truly any better of a shotgun, or is it really just personal preference?

Thanks in advance for the advice!

short barrel is cylinder bore and the 26 is a fixed modified- plan on hunting?

some will praise the 500 and some the 870- while others will say they are comparable...

i run 500s- i like older 870s but the newer express models have a crappy finish that can just look at water and rust... unless you use "rem oil"

well, sorry, my mossys sit dry and never get a speck of rust

I did want to have the option of running slugs for hunting.

You'll have to excuse my lack of shotgun knowledge. I own rifles and handguns, but this will be my first shotgun. With the 18.5 being cylinder, will I be able to shoot slugs? I don't believe cylinder is the same thing as smooth bore, correct? Same question for the 26".

It sounds like neither barrel has threaded chokes. Is this correct?

The short barrel is cylinder bore. It's a straight pipe with zero choke. It's perfect for slugs and buckshot and any other kind of shot you can think of. I was thinking the longer barrel was removable choke tubes. Probably changed that sometime. Both are smoothbore.

It's a standard Mossy 500. Great deal. It'll serve you well for more years than you'd care to think about.

Double check the long barrel; the combo they sell around here is a short smooth barrel and a long rifled barrel (pre-tapped for sights).

Have you owned any shotguns before, or will this be your first?

Have you handled and fired various makes/models at all?

Only reason I ask is that buying a shotgun in order to decide whether or not you like it, is an expensive way to find out if it turns out you don't like it...

Haven't owned shotguns before, but have handled a good number of friend's shotguns. I slightly prefer the Mossberg's handling over the 870.

I ended up purchasing this instead of what I originally asked about...

Cost wise, I think it was a better deal, and it was the 2 barrels I actually was more concerned with having. I'll pick up the 18.5 security barrel once I have the gun in hand. They're much cheaper than the rifled barrel, about half the price. I also prefer the wood furniture over the plastic. After all is said and done, including FFL transfer, NICS, 18.5 barrel, etc, I'll be in for about $450.

That's the gun, a 18.5" barrel, 28" barrel with choke set, and a 24" rifled barrel.

i like the 870 for field/trap. the mossberg is better for defense because of the speed you can disengage the safety and rack the slide. the mossberg is a great gun it seems cheap and crappy but its not, mine has never jammed no matter how fast i emptied the mag.

I do have one more question.

With the combo I bought, will I have the junk action slide that needs to be replaced? I think the plastic Big 5 combo has the integrated piece that eventually has to be replaced, but I believe this combo comes with the good one.

I assume this one comes with the plastic safety still though.

i cant remember if my forearm on my gun is permanently atached or not but, i did replace the cheap plastic safety with a van comp oversized steel, it was 35 bucks with shipping though, at least i dont have to worry of it breaking. all newer 500s come with the plastic part, unless you buy a 590 then its metal.

I'm pretty sure it's only the new 500's with the synthetic stock that have the action bars molded into the forearm.

All the basic models come with the plastic safety I think. You can get the aluminum one's from Midway. I was looking at this one for $18.

Not that the aluminum one is bad but I don't think the plastic ones go bad very often, the only reason mine was broke is because I refinished the gun with a bake on finish and forgot to take it off. It spent a half of an hour in the oven at 350 degrees and I didn't noticed until it had cooled. Safety looked fine and not melted but when I tried to move it it was stuck. I could get it to toggle but it was hard. When I took it off the only thing wrong was that it had cracked down the center where the screw goes through. I called Mossberg to try to get a part number the customer service gut told me all safety work was free and all I had to was send it in or to one of their certified gunsmiths. Well that was nice but it was a just a plastic safety and a simple to install design.

I found a whole new safety kit off ebay, plastic safety, ball bearing, and spring for $6.00 shipped to my house.

When I got the new one in less than a week it took me about one minute to install.

I think that's a better deal too, I prefer the wood stock's too and look how much the slug barrel costs on it's own. You will be surprised how accurate the 24in rifled barrel is with good sabot slugs.

MCgunner posted this last week on another thread. I would check it out. I'm assuming it's a smoothbore if they still have it.
