I am interested in a Mossberg 12 Gauge shotgun, but have a few questions/concerns.

-Have any of you had or heard of a trigger housing breaking on a 500? I am worried because it is plastic.

-Does the 590 have a steel or aluminum receiver?

-Does the 590 have a steel or aluminum trigger housing?

-Does the 590 A1 have a steel or aluminum receiver?

-Does the 590 A1 have a steel or aluminum trigger housing?

-Will 500 accessories fit either 590 model?

Thanks for the help!!!
-Mike

The receivers are all aluminum. If you want steel, you'll want the 870. The 590A1 comes with an aluminum trigger housing.

It depends on just what you mean by "accessories" if you want stuff to fit both guns. Heat shields won't fit on the 590A1 because it's the heavy barrel model. Obviously choke tubes are out. Stocks are usually sold as fitting both guns, as are heat shields.

And since you're wondering, I have never, ever heard of the synthetic trigger guard breaking. You'd have to hit it pretty hard to break it.

All 500-590 shotguns come with aluminum receivers, big deal, this has never posed a problem in the Mossberg shotgun line.

Early Model 500 guns came with metal trigger housings, everything after about 1987 has plastic.
All 590 shotguns A1 included except those designated as "MilsGuns" have plastic trigger housings.
590A1 designated guns generally include a bayonet lug, a heat shield, and usually ghost-ring sights though there are quite a few with a plain bead sight.
There are exceptions to this rule,,,,
All Mossbergs built to Military Specification, "MilsGuns", have Metal trigger housings and Metal safety buttons and there are quite a few of the guns on the commercial market, these come as Model 500s and Model 590s and without actually putting your hands on the gun you want to buy you will not know and most catalog sellers and auction sellers will tell you anything you want to hear to get the sale, Caveat Emptor.

Now, Mossberg WILL retrofit a Model 500 or a Model 590 with a metal trigger housing and metal safety button in the "MilsGun" fashion but you must send the gun back to Mossberg for fitting, it takes a very unreasonable amount of time to get the gun back, and, it is remarkably expensive. HTH

What are you looking for? I hunted many years using only a 500A, and it recieved some rough treatment...never an issue.

I do (or have) owned almost every model Mossberg ever made. Some have had issues, but most had none. Certinaly never mattered what material they decided to make a part out of...if thay made it out of plastic, it's because plastic was up to the task.

If you'll pardon my shameless plug: http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=219334

PS - the above mentioned 590A1 has the metal trigger guard and the ghost ring sights (which are not a cheap option).

I have a Moss Maverick 88 which is very, very similar to the Moss 500. I've had no problems at all.

However, if I was going to recommend a Mossberg pump, I'd have to go with an 835 Ulti-Mag. I love mine. They are a little more expensive, but I like having the option of 3.5" shells.

I put several old 500 receivers through hell and back and it was never an issue. You simply don't need a steel receiver with a pump shotgun as you might with a high powered rifle.
