Okay, here’s the dilemma, I want to get one of the Mossberg Silver Reserve 20GA / 28GA (20GA frame) two barreled combos….or, possibly one of the 12GA/20GA (12GA frame).

I have held them at the shop and the balance very well and feel very good, I have read and am well aware of the problems that these guns had when they first came out. I have also noticed that the number of complaints / problems have gone down quite a bit on this forum and others. From most accounts, Mossberg has “stood behind” these guns and has fixed, or replaced, all of the guns at no cost and with an 8 – 10 week turn around.

The most recent problem was with the firing pins being “brittle” and they were breaking. Supposedly, Khan, Mossberg’s manufacturer of these guns, has completely re-designed the firing pins and there is no longer a problem with them breaking.

The problem is that “nobody knows”, or more than likely won’t say, at what point the “new design” firing pins were implemented.

I thought that as a collective whole anybody that has a Mossberg Silver Reserve, please log in and post the first part of your serial number AND if you’ve had any problems. Once we get a decent # of replies, we can see if there is a “range” of serial #’s that are affected, or if they suddenly start getting “better” after a certain serial #, which could confirm a “fix”.

I have a checked with the armorer at our club, the Serial numbers on our loaner guns are:

12GA - TR12 027xxx (4) each - no problems / 1 gun had a loose” forearm, fixed "in house"
20GA - TR20 014xxx (4) each - no problems

Hey Smitty in CT;
I think the Firing Pin situation was cleared up by January of 2007. If your gun shop has the SR's check on the BOX -END for the "Packing Date". Mine just came in and it is stamped ~ August 8th, 2007.

My SN# is .410 GA. TR 410 006 XXX

LG

That's great news!!!, I didn't know they had a "born on" date, I've never seen them in their boxes only on display. Now why wouldn't anybody at Mossberg tell me that???

Maybe because they don't pack the gun FIFO as they are received, so they really have no idea?

Also, different models may sell at different rates, so there may be older 20/28 combos "in the pipeline" for a while, even as new 12 Gauges are quickly sold.

Or maybe they want to protect their resellers, at the expense of the customer. That, of course, would not be cool. Ethically, they should swap out any known problem guns and take care of their resellers AND their customers at the same time.

:)
I'm sure the 20ga. SR's sell plenty fast enough to clear out any problems, and most generally when the solution to an established problem is solved, all warehoused products with that problem are bypassed for shipment until they've been repaired and approved for release.

Hope this helps Smitty. Date 3/12/07 # TR12044. Ive had no problems at all so far. Approx. 500 clays and 6 Pheasants . I bought it mainly for a field gun but I also shoot some clays with it. Every time I pull the trigger it goes BANG and does what I want it to do. I have a couple of firing pins on stand by in case one breaks. No big deal.

I had mine back to the factory(warranty) as late as October '08. The firing pin problem is STILL an issue. I recently had the last set that was factory replaced fail.. :(
