What's the difference between these two platforms?

I'm not really familiar with the 590. Any issues with it?

Thanks!

Basically the only difference is in the design of the magazine tubes. The older 500 has a 'blind' magazine tube that has to be removed from the receiver if it is to be cleaned, have a mag spring changed etc. The 590 has a 'pull through' magazine tube that can be accessed by removing the magazine cap.

Take a look at http://www.mossberg.com/manuals/500 MILS_500M MILS.pdf for a little history.

As to issues for the 590, no more than with the 500 - there was a batch a couple years ago that seemed to have weak magazine springs, but that's a cheap and easy fix and not a big deal as long as it's is diagnosed and taken care of, and I haven't even heard of that problem surfacing lately. My only 590 is a Marine finish bead sight standard model (not A1), and I've never had any trouble with it (other than removing the paint the previous owner applied quite liberally :D).

I've shot Mossberg 500's but never the 590. I own a Mossy 500A Marinecoat now and it shoots just fine and utterly reliable. Bought it from a friend for a screaming deal $250 although it is little older (maybe 10yrs or so) but still looks new.

The 500's seem to be cheaper as well. In my area a Mossberg 500 with 8-shot capacity is $299.
