Most accurate 22 under $200

In new guns, go with the Marlin 60 in the semi and I would say that the little Marlin bolts are in the ball park as well.

Savage MKII. hands down, my $150 ($100 gun, $50 scope) MKII will shoot 1/2" 50yd groups all day, with bulk ammo.

So...

Is the Savage Mk II as accurate as a CZ costing about twice as much? Sounds like it...

Thanks. (Too bad they don't make'em with a tubular mag...)

How does Marlin compare accuracy wise?

Savage Mark II even if it might be a hair over but has detachable mag. They are remarkably accurate.

It's refreshing to see someone who wants a 22 with a tubular magazine. I actualy prefer them over "clips". Marlins shoot okay. It is a question of how good do you hope it will be?

Depending on the model, they cost up to $500. Models under $200 are just as good though. Mine is the base model, and shoots better than my brothers $400+ .22.

That is what I wanted to hear.

I guess the 'base model' comes with a synthetic stock. Local Wally World's here dont't sell firearms, so I guess Dick's may be the place to look at them?

N VA is turning into a politically correct jungle...

Any sporting goods store should stock them, they are very popular. Yes, the base model has a syn stock, but it is a nice one. If you want wood, there are $100-$150 wood aftermarket stocks. And the MKII now comes with the accutrigger, another reason to get it. (mine doesn't have it)

Most $90 Marlin model 60's you see in the used gun rack will shoot circles around guns costing much, much more including many bolt guns.

Heck I think even the new ones are under 200 bucks.

I bought a Charles Daly bolt action 22 for $169. and it's been very accurate for me. I believe it's the Superior II model.

My mossberg 44 will do 5 holes under a nickel at 25y. Three under a dime at the same distance. I used this one to get my rifle merit badge. It'll run you about 160 from the CMP. My grandfather used the same rifle to shoot competition. He averaged 92-100 scores on a 10 round target at 100y. That is 2 inches group size. That is accurate from the prone position.

I posted this in another thread on 22 rifles:

"For an inexpensive 22 rifle the Marlin model 60 gets my vote. It's accuracy is second to none and with over 10 million sold since it's introduction there's no questioning it's durability.

I picked one up at MC Sports for $139.00 and it shoots like a dream. I have owned a couple of these in the past and I have never had an issue with quality."

It is a tube fed rifle that holds 14 rounds. I put a Bushnell scope on it that was on sale for $29.99 and it's accuracy is awsome.

My stainless 10-22 (wally world special) put 10 shot that I could cover with a dime at 25 yards. That is a stock 10-22.

Another vote for the Marlin 60. My bolt action CZ is more accurate, but at twice the price. Still, I love my stainless 60,and can't recommend it enough.

I see you posted the same thread over on TFL. Seems as though everyone thinks about the same way.

My Savage Mark II is the classic version with the walnut stock. It was in the $450 area, but it has essentially the same guts as the cheapest version. Only the stock is nice and yes I like the stock! They make a nice thumbhole stock version too that is priced in the same ball park.

If you are going to be shooting target mostly, you might consider the Muelller APV 4.5-14x scope for it. It's a AO rimfire scope and runs about $120. If you really want to go inexpensive, you can get a Bushnell 3-9x rimfire scope for about $40. They are okay. I have one but I prefer something a bit better in 3-9x like Weaver. Simmons and Weaver are the same corporation with the Weaver line being the more expensive and higher quality.

brian,

I would say the Savage Mark II's will out shoot most CZ's. The Mark II regardless of model have the same Savage button rifled barrel. Savage in my honest opinion makes one of the best factory barrels on the market. The button rifle process just makes a more accurate barrel. That's why the Savage high powered rifles shoot better than the competition.

CZ fans may not agree. But they will shoot side by side with guns costing twice as much and then some.

Not too many factory rimfires will shoot better than that.

Thanks guys

Yea - got the 22 itch, and just wondered. Handled a 93 and Mk II today at Dick's. The 93 just felt way better in the action, and the synthetic stock felt much more sleek. The cheap hardwood stock looked just the part - I would want synthetic. If I wanted to dress up someday, I'd buy a walnut stock.

I do think the Marlin 60 is the new gun to get as an autoloader, but based on counsel here, I scooped up a used Speedloader - no serial number, and it turned 50 last month - still mint bore, and pretty darn goos overall - hope she shoots well - I do like real walnut stocks.

Watching CF ammo go crazy in the past couple of years makes one want a 22. I goofed up not buying 2000 rounds of 7.62X54R about 18 months ago - now it is over twice as much.

Is that with irons and from the prone unsupported? If so, that is pretty accurate shooting. I was never that accurate from the prone. Some of my family members are though and I haven't seen them shoot at 25y. We used a 100y range in Peoria, Il to shoot and they pretty much kept it at 100y. I have seen a couple of 1.25 inch groups and even a 100 score (all in the x too, not just the 10 + x rings) from the mossy, but I won't guarantee that type of accuracy without match ammo and a very good day on the behalf of the shooter.

I'll second the Charles Daly Superior II (now Remington 5) and add the Russian TOZ 78 (now Winchester Wildcat) if you're looking for a bolt action under $200. Either one can be had in the $150 range.

Who carries the Winnie? Where could one find one? I hear they have a bull barrel... Is that one around $150?

10/22 would be the way to go because

You can get extended mags for them as well as different stocks, and accessories. But don't wait. Once Osama, I mean Obama gets his policies in place, no law-abiding lower and middle class white folks will be able to purchase the stocks or mags and prolly not the guns either. Prepare to be opressed beyond your wildest fears. The Clinton/ Brady/ Reno days with their attacks on the Weavers et. al. will seem downright civilized and open and free in comparison.
