I haven't heard anything bad about the Savage or Stevens, Howa, Rem, Tikka, etc. Great rifles to each their own. Also Sniper Central offers a Howa entry level package in .308 scope stock and all for $975 if you don't mind a 308.

I have a Mossberg ATR in 30-06 that shoots MOA with standard Federal commercial ammo 150gr SP $12.97 a box at wally world. I haven't yet done any load development for it but the potential for more accuracy is definitely there!

Just curious - why a 30/06 when there are so many other cartridges available that will be more accurate with less trouble, less recoil, less blast and less expense ? "USSR's" suggestion of the 6.5x55 is just one of several calibers that are a much better choice.

I heartily agree with those posters who advise getting high-quality glass.

You said better? more accurate?? less expensive??? No offense but I believe that the 30-06 fits all of those categories to a T. I`m looking for a cost efficient, accurate, long range, high caliber rifle with multi-load capabilities in a surplus ammo category so .308 or 30-06 are my choices. I have other rifles. You should check out my other threads particularly the thread with the poll.;)

FWIW, my .30-06 Tactical Rifle is no less accurate than my 6.5x55 F Class rifle or my .308 Tactical Rifle. Rifle accuracy is a factor of the quality of the barrel and smithing, and the handload; not the headstamp that is on the cartridge case.

Savage

I have done alot of looking on the same quest as you and I have
decided savage with the accutrigger is the way to go.

I picked up a 1950s Belgian Mauser, is only Mauser ever made originally in 30-06,
paid $300, added a Leupold 3x9, I've never had a gun shoot so accurate. I target shoot 150g berry's .30 bullets with 15g of Red Dot at 100 yds. It will actually put them in the same hole. I load 150g soft points using 45g of IMR 4895 for hunting. Groups at 100 yds are still MOA. In 40 years of shooting it's the most accurate rifle I've ever owned.

+2 on the Belgian Mausers. Picked up a 50s vintage FN 98 Deluxe in 30.06. A tack-driver, and with a variety of loads.

A Savage with good glass is as accurate as anything under $1500. To be consistantly more accurate than the Savages you really need a semi-custom from Hill Country rifles, Remmy Custom Shop or similar type of rifle. Everything else people will list between $400 and $1k may occassionally be as accurate as a Savage, but currently I don't see any of them beating the Savage on a regular basis.

Isn`t that amazing?! Savage is really doing well with their new barrel program. They`re getting the best of most all other brands. I read an article a while back where they bolted several brand rifles down and shot 3 shots per rifle and the Savage spanked`m. I`ll try to find that article because I believe that Sako, Tikki, and a few more of the super high end rifles were a few that got spanked by the Savage.

I like my Weatherby Vanguard. Good solid rifle & a fine shooter, Weatherby guarentees accuracy right out of the box. I have a .308, think they come in 30.06 as well.

Great thread!!

I am also looking into a .30-06
I like the Vanguard sporter, 5+1, 24" barrel.
I am also looking at a Savage because I hear tons about the trigger and accuracy?
MY question is does the 24" barrel help that much that the Vanguard would be a better choice than the Savage?

My Howa Lightning 1500 and my Savage Model 112VSS heavy barrel and custom stock (both 30.06) shoot better than I can. Both are MOA from a bipod or other rest.

I always getting as much for my money as possible so I would look around for a Remington adl or bdl (blind mag or floorplate) tikka, or weatherby vanguard. Throw on some lightwieght bases and rings of your choice and top with a burris, nikon, bushnell, or leupold vx-1 or 2 of your liking and you should be at your max if not under. The Vanguard would be the most economical IMHO.

Ammo...I would say I loved 150 SST's in my 30-06 with 50.0 of varget (work up to this). I have heard alot of good things about the accubond however.

For .308 Win. I'd go with this at $944 MSRP:

CZ 550 Varmint Kevlar .308 Winchester

For .30-06 I'd go with this at $712 MSRP:

CZ 550 American .30-06 Springfield

I'm getting a Tikka T3, They are really great and accurate rifles. They have a 3 shot 1 moa guarantee :) And it comes with a detachable mag system too :)

I'd imagine that a CDNN closeout on a Steyr would be in the running for a "most accurate under $1000". And yet, still no prettier than the CZ550s mentioned by equitytrader (and probably no more accurate). :)

Savage! My 112 with stainless steel barrel and composite stock can shoot sub one inch groups with almost any ammo. It is the most accurate out of the box rifle I have ever bought even at three times the price. Their "accu-trigger" is a bit weird at first, but once you get used to it you find yourself wishing your other rifles were so equipped.
