What is, in your opinion, the most accurate slug gun now in production (or readily available) in a less than $800 price range.

Don't know what they sell for used, but new there were pretty close to the $800 figure (usually closer to $900)...Browning made some fully rifled 12ga. A-bolts. Brother owns one and it has been impressive in it's accuracy.

The other gun that impressed me has been the simple single shot 12ga. HandiRifle...even at it's low price, would not sell it's accuracy short.

Second the HR, and it is way less than 800. I have one in 20, and it puts 3 shots touching at 50 yards with Winchester BRI Sabot Slugs.

ANY REMINGTON 870 0R 1187.....GO WITH A FULLY RIFLED BARREL WITH CANTILEVER SCOPE MOUNT. SHOOT SABOT SLUGS ONLY.
YOU COULD ALSO USE A 21 INCH REMCHOKE BARREL WITH AN EXTENDED RIFLED CHOKE.....DOUBLES AS A TURKEY GUN WITH A CHANGE TO EXTENDED TURKEY CHOKE! RECOMMEND RED DOT SCOPE FOR BOTH.

Please turn off your caps lock. In internet terms, you are yelling. Thanks.

Bernie. . .

You might want to look at a Hasting barrel.
I have a heavy barrel, fully rifled, 26" for my 870 wingmaster. Emphasis put on 'heavy'.

This shotgun has put three shots into a "Y" shaped group, with all shots touching/overlapping at 125 yds., with the old BRI sabot slugs.
The barrel cost me (years ago) around $170.00 or so. It is fitted with a Leupold 2x EER scope. The newer Hastings barrels have a cantilever mount.

If your looking for rifle like accuracy with a shotgun, buy a rifle. If your looking for excellent accuracy with a shotgun check out Tar-Hunt Shotguns, Ithaca Deerslayers with rifled barrels, Remington Rifled barreled shotguns along with a quality scope and a few others not mentioned. Rifled barreled shotguns with decent optics will give you excellent groupings with this combination. But don't expect and anticipate 100 yard plus sub 1" groupings.

Although I haven't tried a rifled barrel on my TC Encore as of yet, I get excellent accuracy using standard slugs in my 12 GA Encore with a 24" turkey barrel and IC screw in choke. I've been averaging an honest 3" at 100 yards using Winchester 2 3/4" rifled slugs. I'm sure I could drop it down to 2" with a rifled choke tube and sabot slugs.

$314 out the door at Walmart for a stainless steel encore frame, and approx $300 for the 12 guage realtree turkey barrel and forearm from EA Brown.

$179 Express 870 with a screw in rifled choke tube.

$229 1300, again with a screw in rifled Choke tube.

$85 JC Higgens fixed IC tube [pawn shop find]

$250 1100 bought used with again screw in rifle choke tube.

My observations:

-Makes no difference what mfg, platform, barrel, choke, screw in choke, box of ammo, magazine article, Internet scuttlebutt, or Joe/Josephine Blow down the street "says" or is "marked".

-Mr./Mrs Pattern Board are the only ways to know for sure what YOUR gun does with YOUR ammo, for at the distance YOU are going to use for YOUR tasks.

-Screw-in chokes have grouped just as tight - in most cases MORE tight than fully rifled barrels.
This not only affords more versatility , but pellet loads out of a fully rifled barrel suck big time.

Now back in the day, Ithaca Deerslayer with its fully rifled barrel, was exceptional, and there is a reason why.

If you have read Brister, you understand the phrase " Matter of bore, not choke".

I once used a $8 Winchoke on a 1300 to totally blow the minds of folks that had spent Big Bucks, with a "advertised" Gun Guru , one I refuse to buy anything from, and this "guru" is in my state. One that does not install the safety you requested with his "magic", you have to get someone else to install this.

That 1300 kept 10 slugs in a playing card at 35yds, and 50 yds. Using front bead with a midbead.

Recently a Wood & Blue SX2 with 3" chambers, put five 2 3/4 " slugs in a playing card at ~ 35 yds.

Gun fit to shooter, loads have to match bore/ barrel/ choke as well.

H&R UltraSlug - hands down winner!

Once you find the favored sabot slug, the H&R UltraSlug is by far the most accurate Slug Gun available for under $800.00. My 12 ga. UltraSlug, rigged with a LimbSaver recoil pad and a 3x9 Nikon SlugHunter scope will consistently shoot a single ragged hole at 100 yds. from a sandbagged bench rest. I have never seen another slug gun capable of that level of accuracy. Keep in mind that I spent over $150.00 trying different sabot slugs to determing which my gun liked best but the 6-point I got this year and the 8-point I got last year tell me it was not a waste of money.

I also have a Remington 11-87 with a cantilevered rifled barrel. That gun prefers 3" Remington Accutips but my UltraSlug prefers 3" Winchester Partitioned Gold sabot slugs. Accuracy wise - especially at distances over 100yds, I go with the H&R UltraSlug all the way . . . no question!

I'm guessing bernie has made his purchase already.

But, for others reading this, I'd vote for the Savage slug gun. I think the model is 212. I haven't fired one, but everything I read about them is very positive. Only around 500 from Buds last time I looked.

ETA: Oops, looks like Savage has dropped this line. Buds apparently still has some in stock though, assuming their page is accurate. https://www.budsgunshop.com/catalog/product_info.php/products_id/69513

The Mossberg 695 bolt gun - you will have to find one used. Ugly and VERY accurate. I had a three inch group the other day at 100 yards using Winchester rifled slugs and a no magnification red dot sight.

No faulting the H&R slug flinger - way easier to find and also a fine shooter.

Probably more than one or two accurate slug guns out there but with out good ammo, they end up being just ok.
Point is, to by the best they can be, you need the right combo. JMO.

I read an article in a gun magazine about a 20ga bolt action rifle.
I was shocked to read that it was shooting 3” groups at 200 yards with a few different commercially available loads.
The article also listed the trajectory for various 20ga loads and they were amazingly flat – at least it was news to me.
I had no idea a 20ga was capable of that.
Makes me wonder why I use a 12ga…..
I am sorry that I do not remember the make/model of the 20ga rifle – But I remember thinking it was not very expensive - less than $800

the 20 ga bolt action is most likly a savage 220. i got one for this deer season and it is truly amazing. it will shoot a group touching at 100 yards with no problem. the scope mount is kind of tricky but i think the over all gun is great.

12 Ga. H&R Ultra Slug is a clear winner for me

Here is what I know from personal experience: I have owned or own a Mossberg 500 with a fully rifled barrel and rifle sights, a Remington 11-87 with a scoped cantilevered rifled barrel, a remington 870 with a scoped cantilevered rifled barrel, and an H&R Ultra Slug with a 3x9 Nikon SlugHunter scope with the BDC reticule. All of these guns were 12 ga. 3" chambered. Over the years, I spent a small fortune trying different sabot slugs in different lengths in each of these guns. By far, the most accurate is the H&R Ultra Slug. If all of your shots are 50 yds or less, any of these guns would kill deer every time with their favorite sabot slugs. It is when you get out to 150 or 200 yds that the H&R Ultra Slug shines. My gun prefers the 3" Winchester Partitioned Gold and with those sabots, it groups a single jagged hole at 50 yds, a cloverleaf at 100 yds, 2 inches to 2.25 inches at 150 yds, and 3 inches to 3.5 inches at 200 yds - all from a sandbagged benchrest. One warning . . . put a limbsaver recoil pad on it from the get-go because the 3 inch sabots kick like a mule on PCP. I have a friend who owns a Tar-Hunt RSG he paid well over $2,000.00 for and it does not shoot as consistently well as my H&R Ultra Slug. Now I don't know if I own a 1 in a million Ultra Slug or not. I do know that I wouldn't trade it for a truckload of any other slug guns in the world. Until I bought my H&R Ultra Slug, I wouldn't have believed any slug gun costing under $300.00 could shoot this well. You also need to understand that my Ultra Slug will only shoot this well with the Partitioned gold sabots and believe me and my empty pocketbook, I've tried them all, Lightfields, Remingtons, Hornandy, Federal, Brenneke, and other Winchester sabots. I'm not faulting the other Sabot slugs, I'm just saying that my particular Ultra Slug does not like them. You have to find a slug gun that will shoot better than you can hold and then find it's favorite slug. Even two Ultra Slug guns from the same manufacturing batch may (and probably will) prefer different sabot slugs. So, my vote goes to the H&R Ultra Slug - no doubt about it!

Rolling your own slug loads can help as well. A 350 gr, 50 cal bullet in a sabot can be easily loaded to 2000fps and in a rifled barrel can be very accurate. I loaded my own for years and out of a Savage 212 I was getting well under 2 inch groups at 100 yards.

The Mossberg 500 pump action shotgun with 18.5" barrel, plus an optional fully-rifled barrel that has Williams Tru-Glo front and rear adjustible sights and is ported to reduce recoil & muzzle jump. The rifled barrel is interchangeable within minutes and is 24" long. You would have about $500 into the entire setup which would allow you to change stock and foregrip to another flavor if you wish, with enough money left over to stock up on all different slugs to practice and see which are best for the gun, as you cannot predict what slug will perform the best, no matter how they are advertised!

A good friend has a Ultra Slug Hunter with a leatherwood red dot sight his groups were touching at 100 yards. with an optic i think you would be under 400 bucks with out a problem.

I love my H&R slug hunter as well. I paid $200 for mine (new) through a dealer 4 years ago, another $75 for rings and a BSA Cat's Eye 1.5-4X scope. I can keep three shots inside my 6 inch target at 150 yards (my zero).

Highly recommended

The Savage 20 gauge slug gun may be the most accurate every produced and comes with the accutriggger for about $450. It's 200 yard slug gun using the Remington sabots. At the SHOW show last week in Las Vega they also had the new 12 gauge version at the same price. The action on it was as smooth as any centerfire rifle I've ever handed.

But why beat yourself to death with the 12 when the 20 will group 3-4 inches at 200 yards and what a great price.

The Browning A-Bolt and the Tar Hunt were the best in the 12 gauge guns but now the used Browning's sell for $2,000 plus when you can find one. The Tar Hunt which is made in Bloomsburg, PA also is in that price range.

Tom

I had a bolt action Savage in my youth (it was a tack driver).

One of my deer camp buddies have the H&R ultra slug (its a 10ga barrel bored and rifled for 12ga). Its heavy and simple but will shoot saboted slugs (Remington Copper) in to nice groups at 200 yards.

T H&R slug guns are probably the most accurate out of the box slug guns you can buy.Their only drawbacks for some people is the fact that they are a single shot and not a repeater, and their recoil is rather stout.
