I'm looking to get a .45 ACP range gun and was wondering what 45s have a reputation for being pleasant to shoot (nice trigger would be a plus) and a good value?

Not sure here if you are thinking just of semi's - instance 1911 etc. If so we could beneficially move this over to autoloaders.

If you want to include moonclips and revo's then we'll leave it here.

I have three favorites: 1911 Kimber Classic Stainless full size, S&W 625 Mountain Gun, Springfield 1911 A-1 Loaded full size. I am sure there will be a lot that say otherwise but I have never shot a .45 ACP double action auto that I really liked. The HK USP was the best to me DA auto that I tried but still sticking to the 1911 type in .45 auto's.

P95Carry, I'm considering both revolvers and semis. I have a .357 (GP100) and a 9mm (CZ75B), I'm told that .45 ACP isn't as "snappy" and actually quieter than either (158 db vs 163/4 db)... so I'd be interested in a fun-to-shoot 45.

I'll add a second vote for the CZ 97b, it's a virtual joy to shoot. Mine has stock springs but I understand that a heavier spring will soften the perceived recoil even more.
CZ is almost too pleasant to shoot, my 2ndex loved shooting the thing, but refused to buy her own!

I love my SIG P220A. I don't own a 1911 of any sort but the ones I've fired have been almost as pleasant as my SIG.

Sig 220 ST.

The heavy all steel frame soaks up recoil, making the .45 acp a real powderpuff!

G21: The light, all-polymer frame absorbs recoil and makes the .45ACP a real powderpuff! :) Plus, the low bore axis mitigates muzzle flip. Downside is that the trigger will never be as good as a good 1911 trigger; won't attract as much attention from your buddies as a 1911 costing three times as much, etc., etc.

I love my Kimber officers model. I like automatics.
however I went to the range yesterday and fired a friends S&W 625.
Apparently I like revolvers now also :what: I am now looking for a used 625 cause it was a really sweet shooter!

I'm going to assume you're being facetious since I've never heard anyone say that lighter polymer frames have any beneficial effect on recoil.

So basically in the running right now:

- S&W 625
- 1911 variant (Kimber specifically)
- CZ 97B
- Sig 220

I prefer wheelguns for the range- and am intrigued by getting a moonclip fed revolver- but since I want a "low" recoil .45, I'm leaning towards a bottom-feeder under the assumption that the action will absorb some of the recoil. Do I really need to shell out $800+ or can I just find a "cheap" .45 that's massive to mitigate recoil?

PaladinX13,

Since no one has mentioned them, I will.

Ruger makes 3 semi auto .45's, the P90, P97 and the new P345. These are all fine guns and utterly dependable. I carry a P90 that has several thousand rounds through it with out a bobble.

I suggest you go to a range and rent some, run a box of shells through each and pick the one you shoot the best.

Good luck and let us know what you decide.

if you want an autoloader it is hard to beat the straight-pull 1911 trigger.

It's amazing to me how many of us have the S&W 625! :) No wonder they are getting hard to find; they are all here! ;)

I will add they are just a super revolver be it in 45 ACP which mine is or those in .45 LC. Be hard pressed to find a better handgun for all around use!

Hands down, my SW1911 is the smoothest shooter in .45acp I've ever experienced.
