Does anyone happen to know (or maybe have links to data sources) on the most popular 9mm autos sold in the US. Whether it be military, police, private citizen use?

While I try to remain optimistic, I figure it never hurts to protect myself against the gun grabbers, should the laws every become so strict it's impossible to buy a handgun.

I figure if I have one of the most popular 9mm autos in the collection, at least I will be able to find parts for many years to come.

The Glock and Beretta have done time as issued sidearms for military and police use, so they are around in pretty impressive quantities. The Sig has also been a standard issue, but not nearly to the same extent.

That should have read "Military and police issue". However I wasn't referring strictly to the U.S. (because obviously I can't read straight and thought the OP meant "worldwide")

Should I mention that I work third shift? I'm just gonna stop typing and go to bed now, I think thats for the best.

According to the clock website, the 19 has been used by USAF pilots

I would think either the Glock would rank very very high, if not topping that list for top 9 mm pistol in the US.

I was not aware that the Glock was US military issue.

The Army of the Potomac....CIA. And many military serving as instructors with the Iraqi police are issued G17s.

Glock 17 has to reign as number one by now. Beretta is probably second. At one time it was the Luger.

Ruger's P89 has been around since about 1990... still being produced... so there's a ton of them out there.... including mine...

You silly Glock boys. The Beretta 92 is hands down more units, and larger service history. Its been in production since 1975... The Glock 19 came out in 1990... Here's a list from Wikipedia.

U.S. Military (M9)
French Military (92G)
Italian Military
Italian Police
Italian Carabinieri
South African Military (Z88 licensed copy)
Peruvian Navy (92F)
LASD (Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department)
LAPD (Los Angeles Police Department)
Algerian Police
Maryland State Police (96D)
Prince George's County Police Department (Prince George's County, Maryland)
Spanish Civil Guard

Thanks for the info everyone. I knew the glock would come back among the top, but for some reason that beretta slipped my mind.

Considering the weight and size, I think I see a glock in my future

"The Best (Most Popular) 9m/m

Besides the Glock's, one you folks are over looking is the very fine SIG-SAUER
P226, the the even harder to find P228. For me, my West German P228 does
it~! Perfectly balanced, early (1990) production model with a low serial #.
Deadly accurate, superior craftsmanship, and reliable as death its-self~! :uhoh:;)

abarth,
I understand your point, but it is tough to really know how many of those things were cranked out in the USSR, Bulgaria, Germany and (above all) China. Even a makarovnick such as myself would have to assume that the Beretta 92 must have the edge...particularly if you think about the long service life of the makarov.
Hoffy

You silly Glock boys. The Beretta 92 is hands down more units, and larger service history.
French and Spanish CG? Who cares. More importanly, no new agencies have adopted the Beretta for years and years.

I do like the Beretta and it's very accurate for a stock pistol. It makes a nice service weapon, especially in 9mm. The 40 just doesn't have enough magazine capacity for such a large heavy weapon, IMO. 92/96 suck as a concealed piece.

I suspect that Glock sells 50 pistols for every Beretta. That was the question remember, the most popular 9mm auto sold in the US. The list of US LEO agencies that have adopted Glock would be thousands long.

Makarov and its copies, may be?
I doubt Makarov is any on the list of most popular 9mms in the US.

It's the Beretta 92FS and the count wouldn't even be close. Consider that the largest police force in the US, NYCPD, still has fewer than 40k officers, not all of whom use the issue Glock. Widespread domestic police use sounds impressive until you realize most agencies are small.

The 92FS, aka M9, aka M9A1, is approaching 700k US Armed Forces contract pieces delivered. So, there are nearly three quarters of a million federally owned Berettas before counting the hundreds of thousands, if not millions, sold to civilians in and out of law enforcement, and not even counting those sold globally to foreign armies noted above.

No way Glock sells 50 G17/19 pistols for every 92FS/M9 sold. Nines are no longer in vogue in LEO circles.

Besides, Glock is starting to have its po-po supremacy severely tested for the first time, so it's agency track record is not growing, but shortening, for every HK, SIG, M&P sold to such agencies.

I guess it has fallen out of favor now.....but the Browning Hi-Power must have sold a zillion units in the zillion years it's been on the market.

It must rank very high in total numbers out there.

P226,

I don't think anyone's really overlooking it (I own one) but while it may be the "best" it's pricing will keep it from ever being the "most popular".
