Hey, everyone.

I'm just now getting into shooting and one of my friends is asking me for advice like I'm already an expert (which I'm not!) :D

My basic question is: he is looking for a .22lr pistol (to learn fundamentals on the cheap) and everyone's recommended to me the Ruger MkIII, so I passed that on to him. However he doesn't like the aesthetics and wants a more 'cool, modern' looking pistol- something like a Sig Mosquito or Walther P22, I guess.

So I'm recruiting your help- what is the most reliable (and accurate) .22lr pistol that has a modern design like a larger caliber?

geesh.. i own both of those, neither one would i call dependable like a Ruger or Browning buckmark.

but the Walther is the more reliable IMO.

Id say get a Glock and .22 conversion hahaha

My Walther P22 is reliable. I have the factory compensator. As long as you keep it clean and lubed it does great and will eat most any ammunition.

Whenever I take it out everyone always wants to shoot it. Fun gun and cheap to run!

Do you want an accurate gun that will last you a lifetime? (Ruger, Browning)

Or look like a Buck Rogers ray-gun? (Neos, etc)

Can't have both!

i have a MK I and a neo's...the neos is every bit as dependable as the ruger....now it is Not as accurate....but it is way more accurate than the misquetio my friend owns....

Can't go wrong with the Ruger. If all you are trying to teach is basic safetly.

If it's practice for an actual self-defense firearm, then I'd say a 1911 conversion.

I find rather funny that h that everyone is suggesting a 1911 as a more modern looking .22lr...it was designed almost 100 years ago

I'm not getting down on anyone.....i just think it has alot to say for the 1911 as to what effect it has had on all guns produced after it

I wouldn't advise buying a firearm with a slide that's made out of pot metal, ala the P22. If you want a "modern" looking .22 caliber pistol, find yourself an original Whitney Wolverine. It's the original space ray gun, and it's a wonder to behold -- even to this day.

pot metal pot metal pot metal pot metal...blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah.

Seriously, what is so hard to figure out that a 22lr would not cycle a normal metal slide that is of equivalent density of a normal 9mm or .40?

Do people want an aluminum slide? or a super thin stainless?

Walther SP22 is aluminum isn't it?
The p22 is pot metal...and so what? it can break, its not this and its not this...

Get one with a B on the magazine and see if you have problem. Use HV ammo like the instructions say. Be happy.

Maybe a Firestorm (Bersa) FS-22? They look more modern and Bersa has a decent reliability record.

Hey, guys. Thanks for the tips.

In terms of what he means by modern looks: just, anything that is thought of in terms of a scary, black semi-automatic pistol. 1911 frame, polymer, hammer, striker, whatever- just something that doesn't look 'old' or 'niche' or 'novel'.

I've got 8,000 rounds through my Walther P22. I don't think it is very reliable. I have the B model. The P22 will not give you big problems, but it will give you a multitude of little ones. My best "scores" with my P22 at 25 feet are equal to my best "scores" with my Ruger Mk III Hunter at 25 Yards.

And even still, I do not think I would sell that P22. It is just fun. I don't really understand it. My wife loves it.

Between the p22 or the mosquito the p22 is more reliable. I have owned both and the mosquito would shoot well with minimags but nothing else(swapped springs). I buy .22's to shoot bulk ammo and if they cant even do that they have no value to me. I really like the buckmark but have a phoenix arms hp22a with a 5inch barrel that is a shooter and dirt cheap(always shoot it).

Doesn't Olympic Arms make a polymer-frame copy?
