Straightshooterjake hit the nail on the head! With no magnification all you do is focus on the target, get the red dot where you want it and pull the trigger. With my eyes, I'm pretty useless past 25 yards with iron sights even off a rest. At 75 yards off a rest, I can hit a 8" gong just about every shot with iron sights, but with the Red Dot, I can shoot a 4" Gong 9 out of 10 times.
Makes a huge difference. What have you got to lose? The cost of the gunsmith (mine charged $75) Cost of the mounting rail ($10-20) and cost of the optics which could run from $30 to several hundred. The Simmons that is on sale would be my recommendation at least for a starting sight. You can always upgrade if you decide you want to stick with the red dot and you want something different.
