ok that is 2 punches broke and this time i had the oil sit overnight in the holes and nothing not even movement it seems. Might have to break out the drill next.:mad::mad::mad::fire::fire::fire::banghead::banghead::banghead::cuss::cuss::cuss:

should i just get the Bassett scope mount and be done with it?? My only worry is that it cants the scope to the left of the rifle if this is so then I cant do that as I am a lefty shooter?

Either Bassett mount (Weaver or Picatinny) mount the scope in the middle line of the rifle. The Weaver just has the scope rings mounted at an angle but the scope still sits in the middle. I assume this is what you are asking like the offset Garand mount?

Here is the low down on the Bassett Machine mounts:

- The weaver mounts are cheaper and they come on 2 heights. The normal height mounts the scope pretty high and the low will probably block your iron sites (I like the low myself). The design of the weaver mount is such that you do not have much forward/backward adjustment for eye relief. So if you have a scope with small eye relief (like a Bushnell Elite 4200) you may need to fiddle with extension rings .

- The Picatinny comes in one size and is a bit high so you will need to buy some sort of a cheek piece but that is true with all the M14 mounts. You can use your irons with the picatinny. It is a bit more money than the weaver but allows the scope to be mounted farther back which is good.

Both Basset mounts offer the ability to take of the mount and remount without loosing zero which is nice. All in all they are decent scope mounts from a good small business.

so you are saying that if i get the bassett I have to get special scope rings and a cheek rest??? If so I would like to use the iron sights what would you recommend as I am just tired of messing with this and want it done

You don't need special rings. I was just saying that some people reported using extension rings with the weaver mount to get the scope back farther for scope with eye relief under say 3.25". All M14 mounts require the use of some sort of a cheek pad as the scope mounts in general mount the scope too high (this is an M14 platform limitation). You would need one too with your mount. A cheap one that velcroes on or ties on on are $20.

Like I said before the M14 irons are great. Depends what you are using this for, target shooting or hunting? I use mine for hunting so I like to have a scope. If I were just using it for target shooting I would probably stick with the irons and learn to shoot well with those at long distances.

I personally would recommend the Picatinny Bassett Machine mount and that is what I would use if I did not get a deal on my SEI weaver mount. Check the classified adds over at the M14 firing line forums and post a WTB maybe you can get a deal. Also you can sell your mount over there unless it is an SAI mount as those really do not sell too well unless you mark it way down. You can also sell yours on GB.

Otherwise if you want an easy modern platform get an AR and I will gladly take that piece of junk off your hands

Here is mine with a cheek piece I got from Fulton:

well I had a AR but I traded up for my rifle and some extra cash. I am using this rifle for hunting and target shooting. I will get the Bassett as I do not want to ruin my rifle using a drill.

ok i am officially done with this pin it will not budge the only way it will is if i drill it out, which I do not feel comfortable doing. So Bassett it is.

Yeah probably a smart move I would not trust myself either. If you do end up sending the rifle out you can always have them do it. You should be happy with the Basset Mount though.

Well I want it done before Iraq when I get back from Iraq or while I am there I will have them do a total re haul on it to get everything as good as it can be.
