I need advice on mounting a scope on my FAL. It's a DSA SA58 Para Carbine, meaning 16.25" barrel and folding stock. Basically, it's this one:

It already has the DSA "extreme duty" top cover, so there is a picatinny rail in place. I also already have a scope for it -- it's a Burris Signature Select 4-16x 44mm with lighted ballistic plex reticle (model 200772). According to Burris, outside dimensions are 60mm at the objective end, and 39mm at the ocular end. It is 15.5 in long, with optimal eye relief of 3.5-4.0 inches.

I have a couple of challenges in mounting it. First, the rings I have for it are too low (it was previously mounted on PTR-91, and the 'claw' scope rised allowed it to work just fine with short rings). Does anyone one how to determine the right ring height?

Second, it seems to me that if I mount it so the eye relief is correct, the ocular will be almost exactly over the existing rear sight (Belgian flip style aperture with protective ears). This one:

It looks like I could remove the rear sight, which would allow the scope to me mounted lower. That's good. I don't really like the idea of not having irons at all, though. In fact, I was thinking that some sort of quick-detach mechanism for the scope would be ideal. Any suggestions? In order to keep the scope low AND have backup irons, though, I'd need to find some kind of folding rear sight. I've looked and can't find such a thing offered for FAL's with the folding stock.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

nice rifle!
seems a bit much glass for that type of FAL but that's just MO which is rarely consensus!
i mounted a leupold 6x42ao mildot in leupold medium QRWs on my SA58. (just irons on my para for now).

it sits nice & low and the eye relief allows it to sit just forward of the rear sight. it's worked great and i really like the whole setup.
i'd recommend the QRWs wholeheartedly (also use them on my PSS), RTZ after removal is pretty close from my limited testing of it and judging from my rifle it looks like the mediums would be just too lowfor your scope, unless you're putting a FF tube on it in which case i think they'd be just right.
removing the rear sight kinda sucks for the obvious reason of 'what if the scope fails' but also the aesthetics of the rifle without one are terrible IMO.
i have seen inserts that fill the void of the sight base (aesthetic).
or you could use a commonwealth or indian rear sight which have apertures that fold down (forward) out of the way if that gives you enough clearance for your scope. of course, then you'd have to figure out a way to shave some off the top of the hinge block for clearance of the standard rear sight base's aft protruberance. now THAT would be neat. (don't really know if there's room for that...)
the rear sights on short barrel rifles such as yours often NEED to be swapped to correct POA / POI problems common with carbines anyway (commonwealth line of sight is about 3mm higher than the euro pattern FAL, i believe the indians are somewhere in between).
ok so all that was really no help!
good luck however you decide to go, and enjoy that sweet sidefoldin' sump itch!

Wow. That's a purty FAL.

I realize the glass is a bit much for a para carbine. I have the scope, already, and just wanted to try it out on the FAL. It's been mounted on my PTR-91 for the last year. I really don't have the $ to buy a dedicated scope for the SA58, so I thought I'd just move this one and play with it for awhile.

Thanks for tip on those rings -- I'll look into them.

Here's a pic of my SA58, along with the PTR-91 (wearing the scope I want to move) and my Arsenal SA M-7S with Kobra red dot:
