Moving From CA to MD... Have a Question

I plan on keeping my permanent address (family home) here in CA. There's no real reason to drop it as I like my official mail going there because I've moved around a lot in the past several years.

Should I be anticipating problems purchasing CA-restricted firearms in MD or any other state using my MD license on the DROS? As I understand, all sales of firearms need to comply with the laws of the buyer's home state. Is my home state whatever my current address is, which would be MD by next year? Or does keeping a CA address screw everything up for me?

I'm investigating the issue, but any additional info is appreciated.

I'm no legal expert on such matters, but as far as I know once you've moved here and have obtained a Maryland driver's license you should be good to go. We do have some idiotic laws, but compared to California we're a bastion of freedom. Heck, with the newly approved removable internal barrel locks we can now buy just about anything and come September the selection will be broader still. :D

Just out of curiosity, what area are you planning to inhabit?

Your legal address is where you live. I don't think you can move out of your parent's house and still use the address for legal purposes. Unless you're in the military. Most states require you to get a local driver license, get insurance and register your vehicle in a certain amount of time. Virginia gives you 30 days.

The local LEOs may even notice you living and working in the area and having out of state plates and will probably stop you and remind you of this requirement. That happened to me.

Pm us when you get here. We'll show you the local ranges:D

As somebody already said, MD is 1000x better than Cali, so getting a MD driver's license would be a good idea.

Oh.....All Maryland THR residents are required by law to attend legislative hearings regarding gun laws.

Just thought I'd forewarn you :neener:

I think you need to change you address. You may have to do this to get a MD license, unless you're in the military.

As others have said, let us know when you get here and where you're living.

If you plan on moving soon and are looking to rent a house - pm me.

Good to have another gun-owner in the state.

the closer you locate to DC the more tolerant they are to out of state plates

a buddy who is a Navy doc had New Hampshire plates here for 10 years
now he's in north Carolina with them

If/when the move and employment is finalized, gonna crash in with a buddy in Rockville for a while till I find my own place maybe closer to Bethesda. This won't be till next year probably. I've read the MD vehicle association site and it seems fairly simple to get a driver's license. All I need is a bank statement and credit card statement to show proof of residency, and my birth certificate + out of state picture ID.

Hey, at least black rifles are still legal in MD even though the fed AWB doesn't change anything for the state.

Md isn't as bad as most people think.

Yes it is.

Where will you be working/going to school. Invariably, there is a better solutions within a 30 minute drive - Virginia, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Delaware.

Not much you can do from Rockville. However, if you need to be in Bethesda for work or some other reason, just move across the river to Virginia. I live in McLean and am only 15 minnutes away and I can do pretty much whatever I want.

oh, the irony

Being a prime MD basher during the time when I lived a few miles away in VA, I find it ironic that I now defend MD's honor here at THR:D

My "MD isn't THAT bad" comments were directed at the crowd that lumps it in with NY, NJ, MA, IL, HI & CA.

In the scheme of things, MD ranks somewhere between MI (with its fair-issue CCW and handgun registration/"safety inspection") and CA (with its AWB, may-issue CCW, and total gun registration).

Move To Virginia!

During two separate 5-year assignments in DC, I lived once in Maryland and once in Virginia.

Move to Virginia!!!!!

You might also want to go to packing.org and take a look at the CCW laws of the two states, as well as the map of what states honor the CCW licenses of Maryland and Virginia.
