So I just got new orders to Fort Worth, TX. So I have a few questions.

Who do I go to to get a CCW permit? Sheriff? Local PD? State PD?
Where are the nearest ranges with the best ammenities private and/or public?
I currently have a washington CPL and I know texas honors it but I want to ease the burrden of buying new guns, since the prices are so much better than up here

This one isnt gun related but Im buying a home can anyone suggest an area that I can end up with an acre or so of land??

Your local Concealed Handgun class training facility can handle all of it for you. The class should run between $100-$150 and the state will want around $150. The class takes 10 hours and the state takes 1 month right now. Google "Fort Worth CHL class."

Howdy friend,

Fort Worth is a great town i hope you make the best of it! Listen buddy if you already have a CHL and it is good here in Texas why do you need another? If you think you will have a problem buying guns in Texas your wrong. See the gun you want, fill out the paper work, wait 5mins, buy the gun its that easy.

but il play if you want a Texas CHL DFW gun club is great http://www.dfwgun.com/
take the class on a weekend its a 10hr $125 dollar class and it includes all the paper work and fingerprinting that is required. take the class and be prepared to wait an ungodly amout of time for it to come in the mail.

You won't find "an acre or so" anywhere in Tarrant County at a reasonable price, and real estate taxes will kill you (I was paying $3000 a year on a 90K house in '01 when I left). If I was going back I think I'd look to the northwest out Springtown Highway to get a place out in the open. Parker County out toward Weatherford is pretty overgrown, but there are still firing ranges in the area.

The fee to the State of Texas is free, but you will probably have to pay at least a reduced rate for the class. As others have said, the State of Texas is where you go for your paperwork. Check the Texas Dept. of Public Safety site for the Concealed liscense details. Welcome to Texas!

Thanks for the help, the old lady wants a home in Keller I think. I want a texas permit because my washington one will expire about two years after I show up and I figure the sooner I get rolling on the paperwork the better. Im gonna check out the other forums appreciate the help. Ill be looking some of you up when I arrive...

i know there is a gun range about 15 min from keller, called quail creek, they do chl classes on saturdays..i think 125...and 140 to the state. kelller property taxes are ridiculous though be prepared for that..plus i think the traffic is horrible over there... the school taxes around tarrant county are all horrible though. depending on where you are going to work try wise county or like another poster said out towards weatherford...traffic is never bad coming down 287 or coming in from the west on 20/820, but it all depends where you are working...if you can get out towards wise county school taxes arent bad and if you dont live in city limits you can shoot on your own property which is nice.

but be prepared in texas everything is 25 min or more away...

As far as bigger cities go, Ft. Worth is pretty decent. It has most things other big cities have, but not quite as hectic as Dallas or Houston.

You should be able to find land on the outskirts of town, but it's hard to be more specific without knowing where you will be going (work, friends, family etc.).

Well I will working on the base thats right there on Lake Worth, I'm in the navy but I think its an AFB. It takes me 15 minutes to get the supermarket now, and 40 minutes for a sporting goods store and clothing stores so 25 min isnt bad at all. My range is 15 minutes away also and thats close.

Im willing to drive 35 min or more to work.

My wife is going to be going to univeristy of texas in either dallas or arlington, she drives 2 hours one way now to get to and from school and we'd like to cut that in at least half.

Hope this is a little more specific we've looked at houses online but its a never ending list of homes in towns that are in a city thats in another city....

I'm in the navy but I think its an AFB

NAS JRB Fort Worth

Naval Air Station Joint Reseverve Base

The problem with that base is unless you are coming west from 30 there is no good way to get to the base. i used to live in saginaw and it still took me 30 min to get there.

weatherford/west of ft worth would be a great spot for you, i dont know of any shooting ranges over there though... but im sure there is some...im not sure if the fort wolters range is open to the public or not...that is where we went for all of our rifle ranges while i was stationed in ft worth, but for some reason i think civies have access to it to...might at least check it out...thats a 6-700yd range

Walteray,

Go over to www.texasguntalk.com. You can get an idea of the ranges available to you in your area. There is also a plan for a new indoor range near Cabela's. Ground hasn't been broken yet, but investors and owners are on track from the rumors I've heard.

I usually shoot at Elm Fork. It has it's good points and bad points and is about halfway between Dallas and Ft Worth.

UT Dallas is actually in Richardson, which is quite a haul from Ft. Worth/Keller area. Arlington is probably a better bet for your wife, especially if you're trying to cut down on her school commute. You also might want to look at Roanoke. I have some friends that live out there and they like it. It seems to be little cheaper than some of the surrounding areas. Welcome to Texas, in advance!

Welcome to Texas. I moved here 25 years ago and ended up in Weatherford, 30 miles west of Fort Worth. I like it here and would advise you to check it out. Arlington is 45 miles east. W'ford still has the small town feel to it. Good luck.

I dont want to get of topic but UTA at Arlington is a perty good academic school but it has been plagued by crime the areas around the school are perty rough and the on campus police departments report indicate they have from saturday to today (monday) had 2 hit and runs, 3 forms of theft or burglary, 1 act of vandalism, 2 disturbances/ fights, oh and my favorite a minor accident involving a police officer who struck a light pole.

you are so informed

Welcome to Texas! I would go West to Aledo or Weatherford and surrounding areas or anywhere around Eagle Mountain Lake like Azle. You can still get an acre with a nice house over there and still have money for bullets. Plus UTA wouldnt be too far, which is where I would send my wife...might get her a chl too. Dallas had too many people for me, we usually only get out that way for weddings and sporting events, oh yeah gunshows too.
Keller is pricey, an acre is gonna run you 200k for just the dirt if they even have acre lots still. I don't think the traffic is real bad but there are parts that get busy at times. Traffic is relative though. As far as ranges go I have use of a private range so I'm not much help there but the Winchester Gallery has a pistol range, Alpine has a range in Ft Worth and Elm Fork has a range in Dallas. The last 2 have good setups for sporting clays which is what we use them for. I got my chl from chltx.com and I enjoyed it very much, we qualified at Winchester.

TCU is also a great school.

NAS JRB is the former Carswell AFB. SAC base from many years ago. Watch "Strategic Air Command" with Jimmy Stuart. Filmed there.

Keller to Tac Pro is about an hour and a half. Training facility, CHL class, everything else. 100, 200, 1000 yard ranges, 2- 50 yard pistol bays, one 25 yard bay, 15 yard class room bay, skeet platform, sniper tower (qualifications required for some things).

Sorry its been long, had to go out on det. Thanks all so much for your help, Im going to making a trip in sept for some house hunting. I appreciate all the suggetions and have already started taking them into account while Im looking at homes. Thanks all so much !

Welcome to Texas. :) I live in Granbury... like 30 minutes South-West of Fort Worth, and commute to Fort Worth daily for work at Lockheed Martin.

Lots of land around Granbury, and a easy commute to Fort Worth depending on where you are working. Smaller city, but it's growing. Brazos River runs right through the middle of the city and has been dammed up to form a lake. I like it here. :D

Being from the DFW area, I'd recommend either Weatherford or Grandbury.

1. they are rural and it will be easier to find your land
2. stay out of Ft. Worth the crime is high
3. send your wife to either TCU or UTA (that's Univ TX at Arlington) and just plain forget about UTD, the traffic will eat her lunch

If you like more affluent areas it might be harder to find open land.

Hello & welcome to Texas.

As far as places to live west of Ft worth is good in the Weatherford/Aledo area. We live to south in Burleson which is good also. I am not real sure what you are looking for in the way of house/acreage. Someone suggested Granbury, nice area but long commute for you and your wife. Probably close to 45 minutes for you to the Joint Reserve Base and close to an hour for her to UTA

As far as your CHL you complete the course which available almost anywhere for $100-$125. Send your paperwork in to Texas Department of Public Safety. Right now it is taking close to 30 days I believe. Of course you will a Texas Drivers License to do this, here in Texas your CHL is tied to your drivers license. If you are active military I believe there is not to pay to state. If not then it is $140, half that if you have previously served in the military and can show a DD214 or are over 60.

University Of Texas at Arlington(UTA) is your wifes best bet, cheaper then TCU and you don't have to fight the traffic in Dallas.

The ranges where my wife and I go to shoot are:

http://www.ontargetfirearms.com/index.html We took our CHL class here, $99 each used their guns and ammo. Did fingerprints and photo on site, package was ready to mail to DPS just add money.

http://www.winchestergallery.com/ They have special matches for ladies only my wife participated in couple.

http://www.txcqb.com/ They give senior discount on range fees and have a Ladies night where they shoot free.

We don't care for for Alpine to much as we have seen lots of unsafe gun handling there, and I doubt I will ever get my wife to go back there.

If I can be of further assistance, I was born and raised in the Ft Worth area. I have spent most of my life here.

Check this website for on CHL here in Texas http://texaschlforum.com/ Lots of good info there.

Marty

UTD is an excellent school. My friend got his EE degree there and is now getting his masters at SMU.

The Dallas traffic is certainly something. It takes some getting use to even if you've lived in a big city like Houston.

Welcome to Texas!
