Hey everyone, what am I going to have to do about that? When I left Michigan 25 years ago I owned some Rifles and Shotguns and some Black powder pistols, but no Handguns. I'm moving home soon to be closer to my aging parents and I now own More Rifles and Shotguns and Black powder pistols but I've also added several Handguns and have my CWP from Arizona.

There have since seemed to be some different laws passed about Handgun ownership in Michigan that are giving me pause :uhoh: . I recently read that the Mandatory handgun safety inspection has been repealed. And I plan on obtaining a Michigan CWP as soon as possible after I get there. Should I try and get it before I move? Do I have any grace period to get it?

What else will I need to get, I should not have to get a permit to purchase as I already legally own all of my firearms. Or do I?

I already know how I'm going to get them there and what is involved, I.E. the Journey across country, It's after I get there that I'm worried about :uhoh: .

Thanks for the help

Well, if you ever get down around Oakland County, we'll do some shooting/hunting. :)

Do you have a permit from Arizona? If so, then does Michigan recognize it? I think that Michigan honored my Indiana handgun license the last time I checked, but I would have to confirm that.

Using your Arizona license could be a temporary solution. However, I'm not very familiar with Michigan laws, so I might be overlooking something.

Not much help here, but I envy you.
I moved away from Ohio in 1984 and have really missed it ever since.
I am one of these weird people that really enjoys weather. Rain, snow, and all that. Four seasons, trees, woods, small town values, really nice people, ............................
Anyway, I thought I was going to be able to move back in less than four years but the way things are going with the economy and some new laws regarding our pension, it might be closer to nine years. :banghead:

I moved to Michigan a few years ago and had a bunch of long guns and handguns that I brought with me. Long guns aren't a problem at all - no need to do anything, though, personally, I'm very anal and have receipts or bills of sale for everything.

Regarding handguns, all you have to do is the safety inspection. It has been repealed, but does not take effect until January of 2009. You'll have to get a purchase permit. Take them to the local PD and they'll issue the purchase permit and green cards. See the MI State Police FAQ HERE

Regarding the CPL - you cannot get it until you are a resident of MI, which by definition means you've resided in the state for six months. I had a permit from CT, and had to wait the six months. You can take the required CPL course, but you'll have to wait to apply for the CPL.

Another good site: http://www.migunowners.org/forum/index.php

I just moved here from Chicago. I went ahead and did the "safety inspection" on my three handguns, which involved a secretary pointing my guns any which direction without checking them to see if they are cleared first.

I can confirm that it is a 6 month wait for your concealed license.

Overall, Michigan is gun friendly in that you can carry, no limits on types of handguns, and no magazine cap restrictions. However, they do have annoying rules like pistol registration (going away), how you transport your gun, requiring a purchase permit, etc.

WOW....not on topic at all....but I think this thread contains the sum total of all people in the US that have actually moved TO Michigan in the last few years!

I left Lansing for the Blue Ridge Mountains in W. NC 5 years ago and haven't looked back since!

EDIT: I do miss fishing the Jordan River valley though. Pretty little fish.

However, they do have annoying rules like pistol registration (going away),

NO! the REGISTRATION is not going away! The false premise of calling it a safety inspection is going away. You no longer will have to go to the Police or Sheriff office to have them record the serial #'s looked at and recorded (AKA safety inspection) is going away but now you have to supply the State Police with the paperwork and it will now be truthfully be called registration

I answered this in your other thread in "General."

Generally, it is recommened that you not post the same question across mutliple forums, btw.

No sane person moves from Arizona to Michigan. Just stay put. I lived in MI for almost 4 years, and lived to tell the tale. No need for you to endure that. Stay put. Don't move to MI. It's not a good place for normal people.

Yeah Michigan recognizes Arizona's CCW, but I do not believe the 2 states have reciprocity...

Contact the proper Michigan authorities - you definitely want to be well informed in advance.

We'll miss ya here in Arizona,

Yes Michigan has reciprocity with Arizona.

However as soon as you become a Mi resident your AZ permit is no longer valid, they only recognize permits from other states if you are a resident from that state.

Further you must be a Mi resident for 6 months before you can apply for your Mi CCW, however Mi has reciprocity agreements with more states than any other state that issues.

Now a possible way around this may be to just live in Mi for the 6 months required but retain your AZ DL and maintain your AZ residency, once here for 6 months you can claim your Mi residency (just keep copies of your electric bill) and apply for your CPL, you can do your training before you apply, and it takes about 30 days at present to obtain once you have filed.

I googled and found this. I used to live in Michigan, I think it's gotten more gun friendly since then.

If you live in town, near Ann Arbor in particular, you're going to have to put up with a lot of liberalism, but fortunantly I don't think individual towns can make their own gun laws.
If you live in a rural area, you're going to have to deal with the occasional crazy(like dangerously crazy) person.

Man whats with all the Michigan bashing ..... It is not all that bad...

Welcome home, ...get the hand guns registered with your local police agency upon arrival and work the CPL as required seems simple to me.

It may be possible to work the angles of dual citizenship but be careful not to put your self at risk of loosing your rights in MI for a 6 mo lapse.

I have to agree with You RFC Mi is not that bad and I have traveled though most of the US, each state has it good points and bad points. Since we booted out most of our anti state legislature things have improved significantly.

We have lakes n streams that most states would kill for, we have water tables that we can punch a whole in the ground any place in the state and get all we want.

We have wilderness, and lots of places to go and enjoy this. Yes we have a 6% sales tax, and our gas tax is high, but if you want to live in the country you can do so and commute to your city job in less than a hour.

You can get a permit to CCW or you can OC, though it is not generally done. We are working on our No Cary zones and have continually improved since the enactment of our Shall Issue law.

If you chose to live in the high density cities such as Detroit yes crime is higher there, as it is in any large city, but at least with Mi Castle law you do not have to retreat and can the BG or their family cannot sue.
