I am looking at moving to North Carolina from Florida. I will be living somewhere between Raleigh and Fayetteville. Florida is a very gun friendly state, and I don't want to inadvertently break any laws when I make this move.

Are there any registration requirements? Is NC a shall issue state? I know my FL CCW is ok when I visit, but how long is it good for when I move up there?

North Carolina *is* a shall issue state.

For the most part it is a gun-friendly state. I'd avoid Durham County as it does have some vestige of gun registration from the 1930s. The gun friendliness does vary a bit by county and by sheriff. The sheriff is the one who issues the CCW and in places like Durham and Wake (Raleigh) Counties have been known to drag their feet.

I don't know about Florida but in NC you have to have a pistol purchase permit which is issued by the local sheriff. They cost $5 and are good for 2 years from date of issue. You don't go through NICS if you have a permit but the permit is only good for one handgun purchase.

If you have a CCW in NC, you don't go through either NICS or have to get a pistol purchase permit.

Check out Grass Roots North Carolina's website for more info:

They are the group that fights the hardest for gun rights in NC.

Welcome to NC.

No. Nothing required to bring guns with you when you move.

Yes!

I believe you can just change your Florida permit to a FL non-resident permit. Don't know how you'd go about that though.

Some links that might help you.

Congratulations on your move. I moved from North Carolina to Illinois. Definetely a bad move as far as gun friendliness goes.

North Carolina is generally not as gun friendly as Florida, but not so bad as some of the northern states. I'm from North Carolina (Go 'Heels!!!), grew up in NW Florida, and now in Texas. Also all those taxes, personal property, income etc., make sure you get a good pay raise for moving up.

Welcome to NC!

Be sure to read up on the NC CCL laws:

Definately get your NC CCL as soon as possible. As John mentioned, you need a pistol permit for every handgun you buy, unless you have a CCL.

Other than the funky CCL laws, it's pretty gun friendly. We actually don't have any laws that prevent open carry here and you can do NFA stuff with a sign off from your sheriff.

I highly recommend supporting Grass Roots NC: http://www.grnc.org/

The North Carolina Rifle & Pistol Association is another good Pro-gun org: http://www.ncrpa.org/
(They are CMP affiliated BTW, in case you want to order from www.odcmp.org)

Can you explain the pistol purchase permit? I usually buy my pistols on a whim, so do I buy the gun and have the dealer hold it until I get the purchase permit? Or do I buy several purchase permits ahead of time?

One thing I really like about FL is that I just have to show my CCW and I don't have to wait.

Carry Permit = Purchase Permit

If you have a concealed carry permit (North Carolina for NC residents) you can purchase your gun without going through the county sheriff for a purchase permit. No limit (except your bank account) on how many.

Sorry, I can't help you concerning the Florida permit "life" once you have moved. I would suggest exploring the state website - it is really pretty helpful on lots of items.

If you have the option (between Fayetteville and Raleigh) look at the Dunn area. Smithfield would be good too and, if you don't mind the name, Clinton,NC is a pretty nice town.

Bear in mind that North Carolina has a high personal income tax, highest gas taxes in the south and personal property (house and car, etc.) taxes will bleed you pretty badly.

If you have the option to look in the Fayetteville area but can live south of there, the free state of South Carolina is just about 50 miles away.

Dillon is right on I-95 for an easy commute.

Good luck.

Thanks for the inputs. I am moving because I have gotten a great offer to work up there, and I want to live in a place that has more than 1 season.

The big problem with NC is the limits on where to carry...no place that sells alcohol for consumption (no matter if it's mainly a restaurant like Olive Garden)...no place that charges admission for assembly (movie theaters) and a bunch of other ones but those are the ones that really annoy me.

So if you plan on going around town...your meal options are pretty much limited to fast food restaurants.

And yes, once you get a CCW, you don't have to buy a pistol permit again.

Yep, I gotta agree that is pretty annoying. And no carry in places of a public gathering like a parade.

Other posters are correct about gun friendliness depending on the county. East of I-95, pretty much everywhere is gun friendly. I once read that something like more than 2 in 3 homes own a firearm here. On the other hand, Durham is about as bad as Atlanta. And as for getting a CCW, some counties take as little as one week while others can take up to 60 days (the max allowable by state law, I think).

The local sheriff has an incredible (to my mind) amount of power when it comes to pistol purchase permits. When the Wake County sheriff changed, he completely changed the procedure (streamline it).

If you like to buy pistols on a whim, get a CCW.

The max allowed by law is 90 days...one week?? never heard that, and don't see how that's possible since they have to send everything to SBI to do an in State background check... I've heard that most take right around 60 days, mine did, with the exceptions being Counties with anti Sheriffs.
