I'm moving from Utah to Sumter, SC. I have a Utah cwp and was trying to look up the laws of SC. I was wonder if any of SC residences in here might be able to tell about the how it is buying, selling, owning, hunting, and carrying in SC. I went to the SLED website but doesnt really say to much, I'm no lawer either. Is there a cool down period there? If anyone knows a good, reliable ffl there too so I can transfer my firearms.

I owned a home in Sumter for nearly 11 years. I didn't get my CCW until I came to Georgia. I do know SC requires a class and a test to get a permit and their reciprocity isn't very good. Sumter's not a bad town to live in, good real estate prices and the taxes aren't to bad either. I'm guessing that Utah to Sumter means Hill AFB to Shaw AFB???

SC is a very firearms friendly state to live in. While there are some conspicuous absences in terms of CWP reciprocity with some nearby states, there are also a few states that DO recognize SC's CWP, and there is a bill working through the SC legislature right now to help fix the rest.

CWP here is an 8 hour class followed by written test and shooting test. Both are easy. Takes about 60 days to receive your permit.

SC observes the Castle Doctrine in terms of defending one's home and property. One can legally carry a loaded weapon in a closed console or glove compartment, even without a CWP.

Once you have your CWP, there is no waiting period to buy handguns, you can buy them and walk out the door the same day.

If there is anything else I can help you with, let me know.

There is actually no waiting period for non CWP holders, just the so called "instant" background check. Could take 2 min. or up to 24 hrs. Being in Sumter, at least you will be close by to a publinc outdoor range at Poinsette State Park. One of the items the legislature is fighting for right now is form them to be allowed to CWP on state house/capitol building grounds. Personally, I'm against it. It just makes us all second class citizens.

I thought that when you drive interstate you ciould not transport pistols. i have a cwp and there is route i can take to stay in the green zone, but i thought that if you were moving residence you had to use an ffl? I dont know, my father got in some trouble a few years ago when my grandfather died for going down to florida to pick up his collection and drove back to new york. An uncle, nypd detective, said that it was illegal to do that. so 4oo and something pistols ended up at the bottom of the long island sound and sold twice as many rifles to collectors on the island.

In SC you can travel with the firearms in the glovebox, console, trunk
or behind the rear most passanger seat (truck).
check with the states you will be traveling through.

CWP is not a verb (or infinitive). It means Concealed Weapon Permit, South Carolina's notion of a handgun license, implying it is a privilege. Perhaps you meant CCW, which means carry a concealed weapon.

Hah... welcome to the English language, where verbing nouns is not only accepted, it's expected. :D

As for a useful contribution: Tiko_joe: You don't need to go through an FFL to transport pistols (or rifles) interstate when you are moving. You also don't (as a rule) need to go through an FFL to gain ownership of firearms when a parent dies. That doesn't mean you can haul them into NYC however. State and city laws can bar possession even though the transfer was perfectly legal. State laws can also impede the transfer.... but that's a different issue.

Welcome to SC, and yes, it is pretty gun-friendly. A few points of reference:

You do not need to transfer guns via an FFL, regardless of what a NYC cop may have said. NY is in its own little world up there. Buying and selling guns in accordance with Federal laws.

You need to either provide proof of prior training or attend a class for your CW license. Coming from out of state I recommend the class to become familiar with SC laws.

No waiting period for guns, no NICS check with a CWP, no limit on purchase (i.e. no one-gun-a-month).

No open carry except in a few specific scenarios.

Car carry is legal in an unlocked glove box or console with or without a license, and whether you live in SC or not.

Hunting is great down here.

The worst thing in SC is, like many other states, the restrictions on where you cannot carry concealed, and yes, some are ridiculous.

Where in SC can you not carry concealed other than government buildings, schools, and no concealed posted business? I am planning to get the Concealed carry permit this month and thought SC was not to restrictive? Thanks.

Sadly, coming from Utah, you will likely find that just about every other state in our union is relatively restrictive.

If I ever moved to another state, it would be Utah. I'm assuming you are leaving due to conditions beyond your control. Therefore, I too, express condolences.
