Location
Down on the Kenai
Im moving at the beginning of next month, and was hoping to get some advice from people that live there. The best areas to live (gun friendly, good hunting, cost of living, etc), and what your overall impression of the state is. My job involves traveling anyway, so the location isnt really all that important as long as it has the right qualities. :D Thanks for the help.

I live near Knoxville, which is at the eastern end of the state. I prefer this area over the Memphis area which is at the western end.

Eastern TN pros:

Mountains, lakes, pretty cheap land and housing, easy access to Atlanta and Charlotte, and generally good people with that "small-town feel."

Cons:

It's a small city... not much in the way of high-end culture or shopping, a bit of hillbilly/redneckness to it.

Western TN pros:

Memphis is the big city... lots of action/entertainment, lots of restaurants, bars, music, big airport, flat land and river delta if you like it.

Cons:

It's a big city with all the traffic and noise and crowding that goes with a big city, flat river delta.

Knoxville has been good to me in the two years I've been here. Plenty of gun stores and places to shoot. Lots of lakes for boating and fishing (bring a motor - not much wind for sailing).

Seems that Nashville is pretty nice. It's about halfway between Knoxville and Memphis in location as well as culture, size, and other attributes.

I was in Oak Ridge for business last year and was pretty impressed. Didnt have the chance to make it to Knoxville, but it sounds like my kind of place.

Rutherford county.
Nice rural area with good services. 30 Minutes from Nashville airport and 30 minutes from middle of nowhere.
Not a lot of shooting places, one just burned last year near us. But a lot of open places you can get permission to shoot at.
Murfreesboro Tennessee is the county seat.

I live near Knoxville also. There are lots of places to hunt and many more places to fish. The Smokies are close and even better the Cherokee National Forest (fewer people). Houses and land are cheap. Jobs may be hard to come by (tech jobs at least). Its a nice area.

I live near Chattanooga.
Ranked just above Knoxville in jobs, wages, etc.
Housing and land around here are certainly not cheap!
(Is everybody but me selling crack? Where do people get all of their money?)
But, if you sell a house in New York, or California, and move here, you'll definately be able to upgrade.

Oak Ridge and Chattanooga have large gun clubs, that work with the CMP.
I'm in a great club, but we dont' have a High Power course.

At a small community just north of Knoxville, (Norris), you go by the Police station and get a key to the PD gun range if you want to shoot. :D

We've got shopping, movies, theater, museums, etc.
Chattanooga has an orchestra. Excellent hospitals.

College (UT), and now Pro (Titans), football are almost a religion here.
No state tax, (yet). We just got a Lottery, so a kid with a "B" average can go to a state school for practically nothing.

If you go closer to Nashville, you get closer to the "big city" feel, without giving up all of the "small town" stuff.

God and Country still mean something around here, but who knows how long that will last.

Congrats on the new job.
I bet you'll be happy wherever you land.

I live in Nashville, What part are you moving to?

Great place and I love the gun laws.

When you move here, another excuse for a get together!;)

Sounds good to me. Im not sure what part I'll be moving to, but the Knoxville area sounds pretty good. I wouldnt want to live in town, but within 30 minutes of it would probably be good.

I live in Ashland City in Cheatham County. It is located 30mins west of Nashville. It is a very small town with lots of open country. Lots of hunting and fishing areas. Land and homes are cheep. We have a great range to shoot at.

Don’t have much in the entertainment area though. Ashland City is a dry county so if you want to eat at the better places you would have to go to Clarksville or Nashville. We do have some really good meat-n-3’s.

Move to either Middle or East TN and you will have a lot of new shooting friends from THR.

For some reason, I don't recall the west side of TN having more than a couple of THR members. (I could be very wrong about that...)

As discussed on a previous thread this week I am currently looking for a house with land in the Wilson County area, about 10-20 miles east of Nashville. I work in that area so I am there 3-4 days a week. The property values are astounding considering it's proximity to Nashville. Not knowing your needs I'll give you a few highlights. I looked at a house in Mt. Juliet, about 10-15 min. east of the Nashville airport, nice neighborhood, 1 acre, no neighbors in back, 2500 sq. ft. asking price $165,000. If you need more space (read YOUR OWN SHOOTING RANGE) I looked at a place 25-30 min. east of the airport on 26 acres, 2500 sq. ft. asking price $179,000. Look at Nashville on a regional map and you'll see it's like a hub, 3-4 hrs. from Memphis, Atlanta, Knoxville, Louisville, Cincinnati, and Birmingham. If you're in to sports you have the Titans, the Predators (I'll be at the game tonite-GO PREDS)-and Vanderbilt University has been known to be competitive in the SEC on occasion. If you need some culture Nashville is very underrated, there's a lot more to it than the everpresent country music scene. Nashville has a great new art museum, a nice science museum, a symphony (yuch-I hate classical music), a ballet, an opera, a performing arts center, and a very cool blues and jazz scene. Bottom line is in my opinion you get more bang for your buck in Middle Tennessee than any other part of the State. I agree with others who have posted replies, along with Wilson look at Rutherford and Cheatham counties as well. PM if you want more info/help, and oh yeah, I would be remiss if I didn't point out that should you choose to visit you might get to meet our fearless leader, Oleg Volk, and I'll bet he'll take your picture for free.

Well, I don't exactly live in Tennessee; but if I were
to move right now, it would be too Blount County,
Tennessee. Good clean air to breath, good people
in the community, good wholesome living. And most
likely, not quite as expensive as living in Seiver Co?

Best Wishes,

in the process of getting settled in here in Nashville myself. the wife and I are stuck in a hotel right now waiting on closing for our house.

we were supposed to already be moved in, but long story short got hosed by mortgage company.

we love what we've seen of the area so far, reminds me alot of where we grew up in WV. except that there are actually jobs here. lotsa good fishing and outdoor activities, and from what I gather, quite a few good gun folks. :)

although the weather has been craptastic the last couple of days and I'm living out of a overnight bag that was packed with Atlanta spring (80 degree days) weather in mind. :uhoh:

Most choices are based on whether you need a city nearby or whether you are comfortable living several hours outside of one.

If you travel for your company and travel by air then Chat, Knox, Nash, or Memphis proximity will do. If you are self-employed and have to pay your own travel expenses then you should stay within a 100 mile radius of Nashville to reduce air fares.

EODT is always looking for bodies these days and they are based in ETenn. If you're not staying in the EOD field then that doesn't matter.

Crime is more significant in Memphis and Nashville than the rest of the state, but if you're out in the rural areas it shouldn't be a problem. Meth is a problem the further west you go in the state and could be a problem in rural areas.

If you like the rainy type of winter and spring and fall:scrutiny: then you should stick to ETenn. If you like snow and cold more Nashville will do.

Hey harpethriver, if your looking at Wilson county, go to the east side of hwy 109. The prices of land and home make a big drop as soon as the address doesn't say Mt. Juliet. I live to the southeast side of the county and I love it. If you can abide by a little noise, houses around the Nashville superspeedway are really cheap. Wonder why?

Well I made it. :D TN is one gorgeous state. Lots to do and very gun friendly from what I've seen. Now I just need suggestions for good camping spots in Eastern TN. Thanks again for all the help and suggestions. :)

I'm about two hours south of you in Huntsville, the Tenn river valley is my playground, Tenn river for all water activities, Sipsey Wilderness area for backpacking, Elk River 40 mi north of me for canoeing and camping, Guntersville St park on Tenn river for same, Buck's Pocket State park also, I either bike, shoot, canoe, or kayak in stunning areas all within 10 miles of my house several times a week, generally before I go to work. Come on down.

I'm going to retire in a few years and Tennessee is one of the areas I'd like to consider. I like to go out to dinner and have a couple of beers. Are there a lot of 'dry' counties or areas in the state?

Theres a few for sure. Flew in the Knoxville airport and headed tword the tri-cities area. We stopped at an Applebees and they didnt serve booze. Said it was a dry county. I dont think beer is really considered alcohol around here. They sell it everywhere. So if you are a beer fan, youre all set. :)
