Well, it's official. The job offer was finalized and accepted and I'll be moving to Forth Worth this summer. The most important thing now, of course (even before figuring out when to go house-hunting), is what the process is for obtaining a TX CHL.

I am currently a TN resident and have both TN and FL (non-resident) permits. Will I need to go through the whole licensing process in TX including another class? When I moved to TN, they treated my application as a renewal and I didn't have to take a permit class (though goodness knows I've taken several other classes).

I assume I can apply as soon as I establish residency, right? Can I continue carrying on my TN or FL permits until I receive my TX CHL license? I don't want to be disarmed for a couple of months.

Thanks for any information anyone can provide!

Well your Florida permit will be honored from the Texas point of view but I am not sure what the rules are on staying valid during an address change from the Florida standpoint.

Yes, Texas has its own training requirement unlike the Florida permit.

You will have to start from scratch.

Welcome to Texas, no state income tax but not bankrupt. How can that happen :)

Thanks for the welcome, guys. I should have mentioned that I had already checked the TX DPS web site, but it doesn't directly address the situation of someone moving to TX who has a permit from a state with which TX has reciprocity. It also doesn't say how long I can carry on my out-of-state but reciprocal permits.

Rifleman, one of the things that got me really excited about moving to Texas was the lack of a state income tax. This will be my third one in a row!

Texas does not appear to limit how long an out of state permit is good, as long as it's still valid in the issuing state.

I know people that carry in Texas on Florida permits only, and have done it for years. These are Texas residents.

There doesn't seem to be anything in the law to prevent it. I did it while my Texas CHL was being renewed. Texas DPS got way behind and my Texas permit was expired almost 60 days waiting on the state. In the meantime I used my valid Florida permit.

Some people question whether it's a good idea or not but I can't find where it's illegal.

Yep, there is not anything illegal about FL permits in TX as far as I know. But I do have to question you sanity slightly. Ft. Worth? not NE Dallas? :) haha just kidding. Those westerners aren't too bad. and closer to Billy Bob's :/

well, you could have a fiscally responsible state :) or, you could just make money out of thin air, and as long as no one finds out, its all good.

Dokkalfar, all I can say is that I'll be working in Ft. Worth. Besides, everyone I met when I was there for the interview kept telling me how much better Ft. Worth was than Dallas!

Excuse me, but I have to go resume practicing phrases such as, "Howdy, pardn'r!" :D

Using a Florida non-resident license in Texas is perfectly legal.

And Fort Worth is a pretty great place to live. Or anywhere in Tarrant County, for that matter.

Ungodly high property taxes is how that happens, but at least you can claim them on your federal income tax. Buy a house as soon as is practical.

"You may all go to Hell, and I will go to Texas"

I know this is totally un gun related, but since I took my tax bill out of the mailbox about a hour ago, I had to jump in. $275,500 assessed-$4,270 year taxes. How would that compare with Texas?

I am in Tarrant County (Ft Worth). It's about 2.3% of the appraised value here. Dallas is a good bit higher, Austin too.

There is an appraisal reduction for your homestead, and it's deductible from the Federal taxes so it's not horrible when you compare to the lack of income tax.

I figured one time out of curiosity and I would spend about $4000 more on taxes in the same house just up the road in Oklahoma if you include the state income tax.

So I am not getting hit too hard. Just off the top of of my head 275,000/4,270 is less then 2%. No state or local taxes.[the only tax input I get from other states is from relatives/friends in NY, which is like saying at lest I have it better than North Korea.]

Also, there's no yearly tax on autos, boats etc.

I understand that some states pile on pretty heavy each year when the license plates expire.

I think you'll like Ft. Worth. I travel there a lot (do commercial water purification - RO/DI, etc), and the folks are generally nice and friendly. Give a holler when ya git thar!

Seminole, welcome to Texas, Tarrant County, and Fort Worth. I was born and raised there. I hope you come to love F.W. as I do. Go FROGS! (yeah, I'm an ex from there...can you tell? lol)

Apparently there are several board members who live in the county. If you have any questions, pls don't hesitate to pm me. 'Jus ask away.

Again, thanks to everyone for the warm welcomes to TX and to Ft. Worth.

Wolfebyte, someone else had already pointed me to Mr. Cotton's forum. It looks like a great resource.

I'm not sure yet what part of town we'll be in, though it will probably be somewhat close to TCU. I've really spent only about 2 days in Ft. Worth and that was taken up with interview stuff, so I don't know much about the geography/demography of the various areas. We've got to get down there to get a feel for neighborhoods, link up with a real estate agent, and begin the search for a house, but I've been so busy wrapping up details here and trying to get our house here on the market that I've not even had a chance to think about when to get down to Ft. Worth. Speaking of which, does anyone want to buy a house in Memphis? It's in a nice quiet neighborhood and as safe as any in this city. . . .

Hey Seminole, do yourself a favor and forget the howdy parders!! lol... The only people I ever heard say that were California, in thier best southern accent... Yes it is hot but it keeps the pansies away. I'd rather be a fence post in Texas, than the king of Cali or NY!!

Prepare to be "fixin"... Texan for "getting ready to"

As in, you're fixin' to move to Ft. Worth, where you're fixin' to buy a house, and fixin' to get a new CHL.

Oh, and unless you're part of the MTV teeny bopper baggy pants and hats turned around sideways crowd, it's not "you guys" but "y'all."

"Howdy" works, "howdy pardner" does not work. Unless you're trying to get yourself arrested by the vice squad in a park after dark. Then it works like a charm.
