I am moving from San Antonio, TX to Raleigh, NC officially very soon (am a student now but about to graduate and will make Raleigh my place of residence). I have my TX CHL with a good number of years left on it and I was wondering if you guys knew if I could keep my CHL or if I would have to turn it in and get a NC CHL. I ask because I would love to postpone the hassle of getting a new one if I can and I would like to be able to carry in the mean time.

Anyone go through something like this or know who I can contact about the issue?

Thanks

Q: If I move to another state, do I have to turn in my license to DPS?
A: Maybe. If you plan to keep your Texas residency (your driver license, permanent address, voter registration, etc.), you may keep your license. Students frequently attend universities in other states but maintain their Texas residency. If you do move out of state and get a new driver license there, or intend to make it your residence, the move probably will be viewed as permanent and you may be expected to turn in your license.

You can use it as long as you're a TX resident, but once you settle there, you're no longer a TX resident and your TXCHL is invalid.

Well darn that is what I figured. I am switching to North Carolina residency to get in state tuition for grad school. Oh well guess I will have to be getting a NC CHL.

Well I emailed the guy at the DPS and they told me I could submit the CR-70 form for address change along with a color copy of my DL and have an updated license. This will be very helpful considering I really don't have the time or money that it takes to get my NC CHL at the moment (cost of class plus CHL is quite expensive). Granted I won't have the option to buy a pistol without a pistol permit still but at least I can carry and since I don't have the money to get a new permit right now it isn't like I have the money for a new gun.
