Army life is taking me to Ft. Drum next year. I own pistols and rifles and know there will be some hassle in getting them there. My question is has anyone recently gone through this? How long might it take to get a pistol permit? Will I be able to take my 30 round AR mags? I've got tons of questions and any help would be appreciated. I've done some research but hearing first hand would make me feel a lot better. I'm excited and nervous at the same time. I look forward to seeing what that part of the state has to offer but I'm also nervous I may not be able to pursue my favorite hobby. Thanks in advance.

My son is in Afghanistan right now but he's stationed at Ft. Drum also. I suggest you do what he does - leave your guns with me, they'll be well taken care of and I'll see that they all get played with regularly.:D

NY still has an assault weapon ban and hi-capacity magazine ban.

So, prior to importing any firearms into NY, you will need to check to see if it's considered an assault weapon. If it is, you can not legally bring it to NY.

You also need to have a handgun license prior to possessing any handguns in NY.

So, you will need to either store your firearms out-of-state or store them on base, until you get the proper licenses.

For any 11+ round magazine to be legal in NY, it needs to have been made before 09-1994 and you need to be able to prove that it was made before 09-1994 (date stamp on magazine or reciepts showing they were purchased before the ban date).

NRA-ILA quick summary of NY gun laws

My son is deploying in a couple weeks with 2nd BCT.
If your AR and mags are preban then you are OK. If not your AR must be of AWB configuration. If you intend to claim NYS as your residency then permits can be had in Jefferson County according to a fishing guide I know that has one. He said they are fairly simple to get in that Co. Each handgun must be registered with the state.
If you don't intend to claim residency then don't even think of taking a handgun to NYS since I can see no practical way to posess one much less us it. The mags must all be preban if they are over 10 rd.
I would seriously consider the repercussions of NYS residency regarding taxes, and other controls you may not want on your life before I became a resident.
I have been to Ft. Drum and surrounding area twice and I find it to be a sportsmans paradise they just have some jacked up gun laws and high taxes. The fishing is great and my son said they see every kind of animal from bears to turkeys while out in the field.
Think about taking up the bow while there.
One thing that troubled me was what would happen if a soldier was stopped off post with his gear that includeded his mags, compound that with your possessing an AR that will accept them and NYS narrow view and there might be some jailtime.
Thank you for your service and I hope you enjoy your time with the 10th Mtn.

Pm if you have any other questions I might help with. I am very interested in what part of Iraq you are in and how things are going since that is my sons destination.

Thanks for the heads up. WC145, could you babysit my Bersa Thunder for me? You'll like it. I don't have a ton of posts but I read the heck our of this forum. I'm at my 10 month mark and I've got to say you guys have given me some quality down time since I've been here. I probably have been studying my army regs or something, but this hobby is where my hearts been. Thanks again.

If I were you, I would leave them in the hands of someone you trust who lives in a free state. Try to get your LTC and bring just the basics. Take a low-capacity carry gun and a less than 10 round rifle or two for practice, etc. Once you are done with your term in NY, then hopefully you will get to go somewhere you can bring your little friends.

Good luck.

13B are you going to live on post? I'd call the PMO and see what they say you need to do to stay legal in NY. If they don't have the answer they'll know who you should call.

Remember guys, you still have to have them in your possession as you drive to post!

No matter what the rules are once you get them to post, you have to deal with the laws on the way.

This gives the armys position, in the past I have read some very sobering stories of NYS and gun violations.
Acera is correct and I would hate to be caught enroute or forgetting some administrative process and ending up in serious trouble.
Hear in Colorado, aside from Denver I would expect most firearms violations to be resolved on the spot unless you were a felon or the violation was blatant and intentional but in NY I would not take that chance.

Upstate New York is in a weird situation, particularly the Fort Drum area. I graduated highschool up there, and while it is a rural, open area (has a nice "Midwest-ish" feel, at least in the summer months. The winters... well, you'll see ) it has the goofy gun laws of the city.

I rarely shot anything up there, only took my buddies dad's .270 out a few times, and never even saw a handgun, but people still do shoot. It's still very country out there, and I've heard the hunting is absolutely incredible. Fishing too, you'll have to check out a couple of the spots on post. Nabbed some pretty monstrous bass up there.

Anyway, Fort Drum area is great. Right off the main gate in a little town called Evans Mills there is a bar called Last Call. Great food there, you should check it out. I hope you enjoy your time there and thank you for your service!

im in ny and im pretty sure you have to be a resident of 15 years for a handgun. then wait 9 months. long guns are no problem just bring them excluding mags over 10 rounds unless they are pre ban.

When I was in the military I sold all of my guns. I sold a few to family and few to some friends and a few on the internet. I have regrets about some but at least my 22 Diamondback is still just a drive over to my folks house.

After reading a bit on here I think I made the right decision. There was no worrying about keeping them somewhere of taking them with me.

I'd be happy to.

1. 6 months residency. Outside of some cities and other bad spots, no problem with unrestricted CCW.

2. If they were made before Sept, 1994. Otherwise you may be able to trade them for pre-ban mags befores crossing into our Imperial State. You could also keep them if disassembled. No "constructive intent" for the satte, and so far, no prosc. of evil hi-cap mag owners that I know of.

3. Your AR Lower made before the AWB in 1994? If not, fixed stock, no flash hider. Or, get a pre-ban lower.

NY pistol permit laws vary from county to county. The general rule of thumb is as long as you are not near NYC (and adjacent counties) or Buffalo/Erie county unrestricted permits are fairly easy to get. In my county (Niagara) both my wife and I got our unrestricted permits in less than 60 days.

Stay safe in Iraq and enjoy your time in the adirondacks...they are wonderful!
