Hey all,
As the title says, I will be moving form Florida to Albany NY area this coming December. Can someone fill me in on what I have to do to get my handguns and rifles there legally. I know your all gonna tell me I'm crazy, but this can't be avoided. I'm gonna be there a while. Any guidance will be appreciated.

Well your SOL on your handguns. Your best bet is to drop them off at
a dealer in FL,and have him ship them to a dealer in NY in @ a year.
It will take almost that long to get your permit.
Only "pre-ban" rifles,and AWB configured rifles are legal.(talken semi-auto).
I'm only an hour away, have a friend local to Albany that can hook you
up with local ranges, and good shops.

I don't know anything about rifles that might fall into the banned categories, but don't even think about having handguns until you get a permit, and be prepared to wait a long time for it.

Rifles, pack them away in a locked case away from ammo, you should be good to go.

And I'll keep you in mind, as I enjoy having just moved to TX. :p

Here's the skinny on NYS laws:

Rule #1: Pretend the AWB never sunset.
Rule #2: all pistols need to be registered with the state. This is for OWNERSHIP, not just CCW. You may or may not get an unrestricted pistol license. TRY to get unrestricted.
Rule #3: check all local laws, different counties have different bans in place.

I feel really bad for you. The winter weather, gun laws and the pot holes in the roads are going to make you regret this decision for as long as you stay.

Here's an article from the local liberal paper. It's from a few years ago, but the information and names haven't changed.

This is what your new (Albany County) judge said in it:

"The question is not so much giving the permit, but what, if any, restrictions you're going to put on it," said Albany County Judge Thomas A. Breslin. Applicants must say why they need a full-carry permit. It's up to the judge to decide if it's valid, Breslin said.

"If a person just says, 'Listen, I just feel I have a right to carry one wherever I want,' I would say, 'Well, you know, I don't agree with that statement,' " he said, adding that "I'd prefer if the law was written more specifically, to have clearer guidelines."
Welcome to the worst state!

So what did you do in Florida that made them sentence you to New York?

From an EX. New Yorker who lived in Texas for 25 years and have retired to Virginia.

Life is good, OUTSIDE of New York. :)

Life ain't all that bad even inside New york, Old Shooter---if you live in certain counties, that is. Here in Orange County, my experience has been that a full carry was relatively easy to obtain, and that additional pistols are quick and easy to add to one's permit. However, I'm sure I don't speak for my brethren in other counties, such as Westchester, Rockland, Albany perhaps, and any of the 5 burroughs of NYC, where their Second Amendment rights are denied. I realize in full, however, that the relative freedoms we enjoy in Orange County can change with the drop of a hat---as it can for any of us, regardless of the state in which you live, BTW.

My biggest gripe, and one with which the OP must deal, is the 10-round magazine limitation that our New York legislators have decreed upon us, to save us from ourselves. That means I can't buy guns like the S&W 9mm, for example, because it comes with a 17 round mag. Of course, I could order one w/o the mag and drive 10 miles into PA and buy a 17-round mag, but it would be illegal to bring back into New York unless you modify it so it can only hold 10. And BTW, my 12-round CZ-82 9mm is perfectly lawful because it was manufactured in 1986. Oh, and 17-round tubular rifle magazines are okay, just not the removable magazines. This all makes sense, doesn't it? Why, I'll bet you're feelin' safer and more secure already!

Better check your slingshot collection too, Zepo, because if it has a wrist support, it's illegal in NYS; so you'd better leave it in New Joisey---where they're legal! (Shhhh ... I have an unregistered Wrist-Rocket stashed in my toolbox! In my defense, however, since I purchased it as a kid, I believe it's grandfathered.) I won't even get into knife law, which nobody understands.

Have you found a home in the area yet? If not, I'd strongly suggest you find one that is -not- in Albany County. I live in East Greenbush, which is in Rensselaer County and is literally a 5-10 minute drive to downtown Albany.
Carry permits vary heavily by county here, and arguably, Rensselaer is the best, with Saratoga and Schenectady not being horrible, and Albany being totally anti-rights/pro-violence. (My first permit was actually in Albany County, but it was one of those "restricted" ones.)
Also keep in mind that the "restriction" does not carry weight of law - it only states the judge's preference. The only issue with that is that the judge can revoke permits at any time without cause.

how would you rate Schoharie county? my kid just moved there from Schenectady.

NY law is paradise compared to California gun laws. I was born in NY, moved to SOCAL about 10 years ago... go back to NY fairly often for family visits. Went to a local gun store in NY and they could actually sell you pretty much any handgun that's made without it having to clear a government roster!

***NOT SO IN CALIFORNIA***

To be honest, I've never heard much about Schoharie. Truthfully, the reason I'm familiar with the above referenced 4 counties is because there are population masses in them and I know a lot of people from each of them - that's not so with Schoharie. Though, it generally follows that places with larger cities are worse when it comes to recognizing rights, so I'd bet that Schoharie isn't bad - I'd be willing to bet my car that its better than Albany.

I have a permit in New York. You have to take a 8 hour firearm safety class... which you can take at your local sheriff's office or at a hunting store. Then you need to get photo's and fingerprints taken. Then you have to wait 3 or 4 months. BUT they may honor your Florida permit, especially if you can prove you took a handgun safety course. If you give them a handgun safety certificate they may honor it. You will need to check with the county you live in, every county has different rules and regs. I would call up the New York state troopers get someone on the horn and ask them what they recommend you doing. Tell them your situation and see what they say. But don't be too nice either, don't let them try to force you to take a course if you all ready took one. Don't be afraid to get a little mad or sound a little mad on the phone. Don't be a push over.

Not true. Don't tell them anything about you already owning handguns before you have your permit. Nothing good will come from telling them anything that is not asked on the application.

especially if you can prove you took a handgun safety course. If you give them a handgun safety certificate they may honor it

The safety course must be taken in NYS.

I am SOOO sorry you are being sentenced to live in NY.

You have my condolences, and I wish you the best of luck.
