Looking to buy one of theses an mp compact 22 or an sr22 any opinions
On which on holds the edge will be used as a range / trainer gun
Thanks

I went with the M&P 22 Compact (American made BTW). It fits my hand better than the SR22.

Both are excellent so its mostly personal preference or what works best for you.

I wear XL glove and this is the M&P 22 Compact in my hand. Feel and fits great though reach to trigger is a little bit cramped but I still can shoot it great. So far perfectly reliable with 4 different 22LR ammo types.

I have had both; still have the compact. As posted above, it seems to fit my hand a bit better. Mine is very reliable and more accurate than I am. Both are great little pistols, but for me, my S&W M&P compact .22 is a winner and a keeper. Just as they say, "it makes fun fun funner"!

I have the Ruger SR22 and it is the worst Ruger pistol I have ever had and I can not wait to get rid of it. Go with the S&W M&P.

For a trainer I suppose the M&P it's closer to a real CC pistol. I carry my SR22 when fishing IMHO it's not a training pistol but a plinker, especially with the extra heavy DA pull and the backwards safety.

Well I did it got the mp22 compact and 200 rounds
Of ammo $300 even looks like it will be
Also a good one for teaching the young one how to shoot
A handgun

Well that did not take long LOL.

Enjoy your new M&P 22 Compact and great price too! I bet you love it.

Amazing. Could you possibly tell us why its the worst Ruger pistol you have ever had, instead of just posting, and running?

I have the SR22P. Its been mostly reliable, but with the original barrel, it wasnt very accurate. I swapped in the Twin Tech Tactical threaded barrel, and accuracy improved greatly. Im not really thrilled with the trigger either. Its heavy in SA and could be much better.

The SR22 is the worst Ruger I have because it is very ammo sensitive and all the other Ruger 22's MK 1, MK 11, and MK 111 22-45 run great . Also the trigger sucks, even though it is a plinker. I know people who have the SR22 and they like it, but I think there are better plinkers including my S&W 2206, which eats everything I put in it and the trigger is really sweet. Snoop

That's odd. Most people say it's not ammo finicky. Mine never had a single issue.

The sight are so so on the SR22. My Firestorm/Bersa 22 has a better SA trigger. The SR22 has the better DA trigger though.

I have the SR22 and it has never missed a beat with all kinds of ammo both suppressed and unsuppressed. I want an M&P compact because it fits my hand better but I wouldn't trade my SR22 for anything. I think both guns are great but the best decision might be which fits your hand best.

I can agree regarding the sr22 being a very good and reliable gun. I got mine for my doughtier and she loves it. I shoot it often as well. It works with any 22 ammo I tried.

My advice would be not to limit yourself to just these two pistols for plinking. When plinking you want to hit what you are plinking at. The SR 22 trigger is not too good for that, and for the same money you can get the S&W 422 or 622 on gunbroker in excellent condition that has an excellent trigger too. They are still serviced by S&W. I bought 2 of them years ago and the grand kids love them when they come to shoot.

You must be joking. My SR22 has a good trigger. I hit well with it, but then, I shoot a lot. Yeah, my Mk 2 is more accurate, but it won't fit a pocket, either. There are purposes for about anything. I used to carry a little Phoenix Arms HP22, accurate, but a zamak POS. I replaced it with the SR22. I have other .22s, but the little SR22 makes for a good plinker, too. I usually pick it or my Rossi revolver for informal plinking.

I've got a box full of .22s too... and I think the SR22 is probably the most fun to shoot. Granted, in that box I don't have an MP22 Compact though.

Is it a target pistol? Nope... but my Browning Buck Mark which is pretty close to a target pistol, is so smooth and accurate that it's boring to shoot! The little SR22 is so easy to pack, and mine really doesn't care what kind of cartridges you put in it.

Sometimes it's not the perceived quality of the gun, but it's... I don't know what it is! It's weird. It's a fun-factor thing. I have an old Stoeger Luger .22 that I bought brand new for $99 in 1978 (still have receipt). It is a BLAST to shoot and it's cheap, made of aluminum with stamped steel and plastic parts inside. It shoots great! It really ticks off the guys with "target" pistols when I can out-shoot them with a $99 special!

Buy what fits your hand and meets your needs for reliability and the fun factor! Oh... you already did! Have fun!

Well, my Mk 2 has a 2x scope on it. I hunt with it and when I plink with it, it's from 40 yards (my back porch to the berm) on a 2" spinner. When I plink with my SR22, it's from about 10 to 12 yards on said spinner. All you gotta do to make it fun and actually be able to hit with it is move up on the target a bit. From 25, my 4" spinner is a challenge. I can roll that 4" target 10 for 10 at 15 yards.

Yep, you're right, it's fun. :D I don't plink with my Mk 2 much. It's cheating. :D However, that gun is a challenge stalking squirrels out back in the trees with it.

Every gun has its uses.

Between the two I would go with the M&P 22 Compact over the SR22. Had a Walther P22 and while it had so many other shortcomings, I never really cared that much for the feel and overall handling of the gun itself. I like the ergos on the M&P 22 a great deal better.

If you go on the Ruger forum web site you will see many complaints about the SR22 and poor workmanship etc causing a host of problems. That said, I will call Ruger about mine tomorrow as they are one of the best companies to deal with when problems arise.

I also agree about M&P22 being a better plinker as my brother bought one after he bought his M&P 9mm. It also has a better trigger and is more reliable than my SR22 too. It shoots everything that we could put in it.

Shot it today no issues at all happy with my purchase
I think it will be a great trainer
