This is going be a little long post here. My boy hurt himself in football and is going be out for a while, my wife has a sudden medical issue that is going put her off work for a while and I just got cut back on hours. So between medical bills and loss of hours money is going be tight for a while. My friends dad just died unexpectedly and I am helping him sell his guns. I would love to buy them but money is just not there for me at the moment. but with all the help I am giving them his mother insisted that I take what reloading supplies he had cus she just does not want to deal with it. I have never been much of a one to "play" with load data to much. I reload to save money and always hunt with factory ammo. Just the way I am. {don't have a crono to dial in a load} but the supplies they gave me I am having a hard time finding data for, and would really like to use if possible otherwise shooting is going to fall to the wayside for the next month or two. I will give a list of what I have and in ( ) I will put what data I found but it is not hard data for the bullets I have available so any help would be great. And at this time I have no option but to use what I have or don't use anything so please try and refrain from "alternative" powder advise for it is either use what I have or don't use any. This will be the first time that I have tried to use lead bullets in handguns. I have always used FMJ or JHP. So here goes:

The only powders I have are Win 231 and HP38
The primers I have are WSP and will be buying a box of Federal this weekend.

9MM
130 Gr RNFP Lead {looks to be coated}
115 Gr Copper plated {is this the same as FMJ??}

(for the 115 fmj says 4.4-4.9 gr of powder but can't find anything on 130 lead)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
380 Auto
93 Gr RN Lead {looks to be coated}

( I could only find 95 grain FMJ data and it list 3.2 gr of powder)
------------------------------------------------------------------
38 Special {I can do +P but don't want to}
125 Gr RNFP Lead {looks to be coated}

(3.8-4.8 grains powder)
---------------------------------------------------------------------
40 S&W
180 Gr FP Lead

(I can only find data on 170 gr lead and it says 4.0-5.2 gr of powder)
----------------------------------------------------------------------
When I say the bullets look coated the lead doesn't look "dull" in color. It looks to be shinny for lack of better words. But does scratch easily with a knife so don't think they are plated with anything. I believe the bullets were purchased from Kemphs but do not know the supplier for sure. So if there is different data for coated vs non coated please post that also.

Any help with this would be great cus with the long weekend maybe my boy and I could get out and do some shooting to take other things off his mind, and mine too.

Thanks in advance for any help.

I understand about mid range, and start load but where I am having the most problem is not even finding start data...or at least I am looking in the wrong spot I guess. I have the newest Lyman (49th) and lee and an older speer (#11) but like with the 130 gr for the 9MM and for the 40 smith I can find no data for the powder I have. I can find data for other powders but not Win. Am I just looking in the wrong places???

If you stay on the 'low' side of the tables, close enough bullet matches will produce safe to shoot ammo.

For the record, Win 231 is the exact same powder as HP-38. Made by the same company, just poured into different containers for resale. Any load data for one can be used for the other with NO concerns.

Lots of load data can be found at the Hodgdon website for the calibers you mention. Plenty of .40S&W data for HP-38/Win 231 :

Ya I knew that about the powder just wanted to put out there what I had. And I have been on the hodg. site but with the 40 s&W the only thing I am finding in 180 gr. is FMJ and XTP but not lead. I found 170 gr lead in Lyman manual I believe but 10 grain difference on bullet makes me shy to try something...ya know what I mean.

My boy spent the day on the net. When i got home from work he gave me about 15 pages of loads i am looking for. Gottta love kids and the net...lol

just load them low and use loads for cast lead bullets, it may be impossible to find exact loads if they are hand cast type bullets but you can get close.

load a few and see how they shoot before loading them all but start low and be safe

No i will work a load some. Since i dont have a crono i just go by pressure signs on the case. What i meant by that is i couldnt even find numbers to start with. But my boy found some off the net and it gave me someplace to start.

You can't find loads for 130gr in 9mm because that's not a traditional bullet weight. In 9mm, the traditional weights are 115, 124 and 147gr. 130gr is a traditional bullet for 38 Super, but they can be shot just fine in a 9mm. They do really well on steel targets.

Just use the lower half of the loads for 124gr published in your Lyman manual, read the cases after firing, and you'll be fine.
