The BBC has just published a news report that bears out what I heard from muggers in prison - they do it because they enjoy it, not just for what they can steal.

Muggers commit crimes 'for kicks'

Street robbers often carry out their crimes for the thrill as much as for the financial gain, a report has said.

The Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) study interviewed 120 offenders in England and Wales.

The report said previous attempts to explain violent street crime put too much focus on the desire for gain, and not enough on the aspect of pleasure.

The study comes a day after the fiancee of lawyer Tom ap Rhys Pryce criticised his killers' "bravado".

In a statement read to the Old Bailey, Adele Eastman said Donnel Carty, 19, and Delano Brown, 18, who were convicted of his knife murder, had been "trying to play the big man".

Dominating victim

The report by Professor Trevor Bennett, director of the University of Glamorgan's Centre for Criminology, and Dr Fiona Brookman, said both the amount and the severity of gratuitous violence used in street robbery was increasing in the UK.

It was a "worrying social problem" that was poorly documented and understood, it said.

Some offenders found robbery to be a pleasurable activity in itself, interviewers found.

"It weren't even for money. I had money. It was more like the buzz you get from doing things," one interviewee told them.

The report's authors said part of the excitement for offenders came from overpowering and dominating the victim.

"Anger and the desire to start a fight" was another motivation.

Cash made from crime was often spent on "status-enhancing" items to boost the offender's street credibility.

"After we done a few armed robberies, I bought a brand new car. It's like showing off, really," said one interviewee.

Carried guns

The study interviewed 89 males and 31 females, of whom 36% had been arrested more than 50 times, 17% between 25 and 49 times, and 30% between 10 and 24 times.

The average age of the offenders interviewed was 26, and a third of them said they belonged to criminal gangs.

Some 28% said they carried guns and another 35% said they carried some other weapon, usually a knife.

Prof Bennett said: "The decision to commit street robbery can be explained in part by particular characteristics of the street culture.

"This finding is important, because British research has tended to explain robbery in terms of rational choice and to focus instead on the role of cost-reward calculations.

"Our research suggests that any explanation must primarily take into account cultural factors associated with life on the street."

So, 63% use some sort of weapon firearms inclusive. A large portion of the strong arm only no doubt involve multiple assailants. Worse case, you get multiple armed assailants like the stabbing case cited. Odds are stacked against the citizen.

I try to have my training roughly reflect these stats which are very close to those in the US. I do as much training against multiple opponents as possible and face edged, impact weapons and firearms more than 1/2 the time in my training. Most traditional martial arts and even more modern systems such as Krav Maga don't train weapons techniques as much as they should and almost never do multiple opponent training. About 90% of what they do is one on one stuff.

It doesn't matter why they do it to me...only the touchy feely "give them what they want" crowd need to care. What if they are doing it for fun? You're SOL unless you have the ability take them out.

The study probably has a built in bias. Asking why violent criminals do what they do will get different answers than asking the muggers who don't hurt others. Depends on how they determined the sample size. Violent offenders would be more likely to be in prison (especially in England) to survey as well. Why? Because the police there are owerwhelmed and don't even try to deal with petty snatch and grab stuff. They've said as much.

I can see why they think it is enjoyable they have almost no chance of getting harmed back in the UK. I am sure there is some of that in the US, but there is a much better chance that your victim will be armed or fight back here in the US so muggers will tend to rob victims because they really need a fix.

Sociopaths act like sociopaths. Its good to avoid them and good to be prepared to deal with them.

"...The study interviewed 89 males and 31 females, of whom 36% had been arrested more than 50 times, 17% between 25 and 49 times, and 30% between 10 and 24 times..."

so, total, you're looking at a population of 84% that have been arrested at least 10 times! looks like they might have the same issues of recidivism & 'revolving door' penal / justice systems that we deal with here in the US.

although, i'm just assuming really. can anyone in the UK enlighten us as to how severe the punishments are for various crimes? are they substantial? are they enforced? do criminals serve their full sentences?

of whom 36% had been arrested more than 50 times

The average age of the offenders interviewed was 26

How do you get arrested more than 50 times and be back out on the street at 26? If that doesn't say "revolving-door justice" nothing does!

Saw a documentary on MS-13 the other day (National Geographic), and one of the kids they were interviewing announced, on camera, that he was going to kill a rival gang member. Apparently, a few days later, he did. He made no secret about it, and the police dutifully went down and arrested him. Jail means nothing to these people!

May they all make major mistakes in the victim selection process... mistakes with permanent results, for that matter.

And the "system" lets career crimminals out early because the fear makes people dependent on even more government control. And the system severely punishes self defense because it could give some people the idea that they are more trustworthy than govt. Or maybe the government identifies with crimminals because they are both non-productive classes that take from the productive classes. I can't think of any other possibilities for the idoicy I see in the "justice" system.

The antis always tend to give a "rational" reason not to carry. "If you give them what they want" or "if you are not a threat" or "they'll just use your own weapon against you" are offered as reasons not to resist.

So don't resist and get hurt real bad or killed just because it gives the criminal some "fun".

When my turn comes (hopefully never), I will either kill or die trying to defend my life. When it goes to court, "I'm real sorry, but a criminal life is a very hard one. I guess he just ran into the wrong victim" will be my prepared statement.:scrutiny:

Oh sure, criminals are just schoolyard bullies who have more time on their clocks. I agree.

I don't carry for pleasure. I carry because of the risk of violent crime. If that risk went away I'd be happy to "lay down my sword and shield". Until the yom hamoshiach the lion may lay down with the lamb, but only one of them is going to get up again.

If it's not about the money, it would seem unlikely that giving them the money would be likely to keep you from being injured.
