Among other things the multi-tools have screwdrivers which can help in making repairs at the range. My question is which multi-tool is the best; Gerber, Leatherman, SOG and others make them, which do you have and why?

I have the leatherman supertool and won't part with it for anything. Leatherman has a lifetime warranty and will fix/replace the tool any time you want. Just send it to them.
I disagree with putting a pair of scissors on anything that already has TWO knife blades. However, the Leatherman Micra is very nice and I bought one for my mom. It replaces the pliers with scissors, and works like a dream.
For my 1911s, I'm considering having leatherman replacing the scissors on the Wave model with a brass-faced 1/8" punch. All I'd have to do then would be grind the flathead driver down to fit my stock screws and I can completely dismantle my weapon anywhere, anytime.

Over the years I've collected three Leathermans (one original...pinches the palm when using the pliers...ouch, two Waves) and two Gerber (sliding pliers with lock).
Why? Cause they're handy and fun. Kitchen, bedroom, office, briefcase and toolbox are where they reside. Probably should get one for the range bag.
I like the Wave by Leatherman due to the outside thumb opening blades. YMMV

I've always wanted a Spyderwrench and plan to buy one as soon as it's re-released. But for now I get along just fine with my Leatherman Wave. Handy tool.

Multi-tools should never be brought close to a gun you value! I can't think of a quicker way to screw up slots/finish/etc than one of those "one size fiits all" blades. It doesn't take much effort or room to assemble a deployable gunsmith-quality tool kit: two screwdrivers, a pair of small visegrips, maybe a small hammer and drifts.
I gave my son a Leatherman Wave for Christmas, as he's into sailboat racing, and the secure pouch and versatility of the tool were attractive for the sailboat arena. It was a compact, well-made tool. But for firearms? No way. JMHO.

I have carried a Gerber tool for the last 3 years and have found that I cannot do without it anymore.
Dont worry about the name just get the tool that meets your needs. However, dont buy the $10 dollar ones. They are not built well. I paid about $50 for mine and its still going strong and It had one of the sharpest knives on it that I've ever had!!

Leatherneck - I put the remark about the versatility of the tool to allow for firearms repair in to make this link relate to firearms. I would not use a multitool on a firearm either.
I've carried the Gerber for about 4 years now on weekends and when traveling (don't need it at work, I have plenty of tools here).
The one-handed opening feature comes in handy all the time for opening hay bales or fixing a fence. The screwdrivers are not as good as a real screwdriver, but I don't always have a real screwdriver on me.

I recieved my leatherman super tool some years ago as a gift from one of my customers ( trucking industry perk ) and I haven't been without it since I got it , one of my former bosses gave me a single stack mag carrier (holster??) that he didn't need so I combined the two , they work great together , but the looks I got at the office where a little weird as everyone thought i was packing due to this silver thing sticking out of the holder .
I prefer the Gerber. When I was shopping around for a multi-tool, I found that some brands had their knife blades, screwdriver blades, etc. opening outward from the gripping surface of the pliers. Unless you're wearing gloves, squeezing the pliers full force could be quite painful. The Gerber brand has a fairly flat gripping surface for the handles of the pliers. I have the Scout -
The only one I carry is a Craftsman. Small enough to fit in the watch pocket of a pair of jeans but versitile. Phillips & two straight screwdriver blades, knife & file. Pliers too of course.
If it should break - it hasn't yet but I sure have tried - just take it back to Sears and get another.

Have both, suffice to say don't carry often--not everyday. For road trips, hunting...etc I carry one or both. Micra is especially handy for the office. In fact I did use the Micra at the range...little punch dealie on the bottle opener blade. Blown primer hung up in action of 1100...Had to remove the trigger group to get to action...

I have both the Original Leatherman and the Gerber sliding lock version. I always have one or the other in my deployment bag, which goes with me everywhere.
I get alot of use out of them, it never fails, when I am overseas somewhere and the local food is no good or a particular person doesn't want the local stuff, they generally come to my room with a seriously befuddled look on their face holdinbg a can of Chef Boyardee! I have started packing extra P-38s with me to give away

Multi-Tools were a gift...brother thought with my lifestyle-I'd use.
Actually the Swiss Army Knife have is the 'pre" tweezer/toothpick model. Lets see my truck is a '93 model, and it's been in two vehicles before that...been used to clean game, unstick a hull from a rusty chamber, clean fish, spread peanut butter, fix a hose, cut tubing to siphon gas, fix a La-Porte trap machine, diassemble guns, break into to the range office, screw a scoreboard to the wall during a tournament, and cut steaks at club cookouts...typical weekend at the club

I have an number of multi tools; a couple of Swiss Army knives, a Leatherman PSII and a Wave. I have used my Wave on a couple of firearms for various reasons. When I'm in the field I don't have the luxury of worrying about scratching the finish or putting a burr in a grip screw.
I've also got a Victorinox SwissTool. It has 3 different size blade screwdrivers. They are nicely squared off instead of having the rounded blades that most other multi-tools seem to have. The pliers are excellent, semi-needle, deep tooth and wire cutter combo.
I also have a Gerber which is very good, but not quite as good as the SwissTool and not as many options.
I've never used one on a gun and agree that dedicated tools are best for that application especially scopes since the wrong screwdriver can really mess up scope screws and rings but I don't see a problem with using them on screws that aren't torqued tightly.

Zip, I'd recommend the Leatherman Wave. Main thing I like is the blades are on the outside, so you don't have to open the thing up.
The tool is equipped with plenty of blades, screwdrivers, files, etc., and a GOOD pair of scissors.
Leatherman is a local Oregon company, and I always like to buy local if I can.
The Wave gets a big thumbs up from Carlos. I'll show mine to you the next time we're at the range. Sorry I can't go tonight. Perhaps you'll come tomorrow evening?

I've got a box full of the critters!
Starting with Victorinox many, many years ago through Gerber and Leatherman Juice, and a host of others as well. Have not been able to resist the new multi tool as it would be the "perfect" tool and I would never need another. Sure thing! Best to date? The Leatherman Wave Tool seems to be the pick of the litter. Good shooting

My first multi tool was the standard Leatherman. Not very comfortable in plier form. My wife has a SOG "Crosscut" that was quite handy while traveling. Can't take it with us when flying anymore. The only complaint I have Heard about the standard SOG multitool was the pliers don't open up far enough. . When I went to replace my old leatherman, I intended to purchase a new one, but picked up a Victorinox "Swiss Tool" instead. Side by side, there was no comparison between the Victorinox and the Leatherman. The "Swiss Tool" ands down the best multi tool on the market IMO.

The thing I like the most about the Gerber is that everything is on the inside. All the tools lock, and with as sharp as the knife is, I'm awfully glad that it can't fold down on my fingers. Also, since the tools are on the inside of the handles it makes using the pliers a lot more comfortable than my leatherman (which resides in the glovebox of my 4x4). The one handed opening is really nice too.
