Blackpowder Shotgun

I was wondering if anyone has any links about Muzzle loading shotguns? I'm intrested to see how it all work's I mean i get the jist powder, primer, shot and bang but how does it all exactly work? Also was wondering if you can change chokes tubes mainly want it for, small game, dove, turkey hunting. And if you can't change tubes how good is the pattern? And what size shot are you limited to things of that nature any help would be greatly appreciated thanks.

I'm in the process of building a smoothbore flintlock (20 ga. 42" bbl) and understand that these weapons need to be "pattered" using a shot/charge combination. The lack of choke in a "cylinder bore" gun means you need less powder than you think.

Adding/subtracting powder can spread or shrink the pattern at a given range. Thus, there is "work" involved with blackpowder shotguns. If you change one thing, you change another (relationship). The longest shot I've taken with a cylinder bore gun was 30 yards, and not many pellets made it to the target.

"Less powder
More lead
Shoots far
Kills dead

More powder
less lead
up close
wide spread"

Most smoothbore shooters I know use a "shot cup" and a over/under wad.

Many of the finer Muzzleloading shotguns had spare barrels, both in different chokes and in different gauges for use on different game. Some even had rifled barrels as spares.

go to the first post on blackpowder essentials. on blackpowder101 there is a link for black powder shot gun shooting.

there is also a good article on shooting black powder shot shells. using regular plastic shells. its in guns of the old west this months issue.

I purchased a Optima Pro Muzzle loading Rifle. The company says you can use Browning Invector chokes in it so thats good. Just as Roswell mention thanks for got this might be more helpful to some people to help me.
