I asked about colors from boyds awhile back. (Link to that thread below) And since enough people were kind enough to provide information and input, I thought I would share a little more about the project.

Came with a semi practical but horrifically plastic stock from hogue.(I have plans to make a shorter barreled hunting/“brush buster” with it) I put a vortex crossfireii on it in leupold backcountry mounts.Edit: I forgot to mention it’s chambered in 308 win. Combo took a deer just fine last season, but I bought the gun with more in mind. Right now it’s just a collection of parts on order.

I went with a Boyd’s at one stock in “forest camo”;
188A8503-D4C1-4E56-9B8E-72F4B582A949.png Also ordered camo “hardware”, and I think it will look good. The trigger on it is not bad at all, so for now it remains.

This is one of the first projects of this magnitude im undertaking. So I appreciate all advice and suggestions. But, I will take it with a grain of salt.

It looks like you are doing everything as you should. I'm not a big fan of Vortex. Everyone I know who has owned one has had some trouble with their scopes within 2 years of purchase. However, they do have reasonably good warranty.

My one big parts gun project of this sort started with a in .300 AAC Blackout. It began with a dislike of the factory polymer stock and quickly got out of hand.

I tried a couple different buttstocks and grips before settling on this configuration. I like the final result a lot, with a slight reservation over the MDT chassis mag release -- it sticks way out on the left side and is apt to unintentionally drop the mag. At some point I should see whether I can file it nearly flush.

I’ve heard such a broad range of opinions on vortex, I just shake my head. Haha. Personally I’ve had ok result so far. And I got a $1399 scope for $699. So I’m not complaining so far. Ya, I’d like a nightforce, but budget… I think it’s worth a try for that kind of deal.

What is it chambered in? Also congratulations on starting your build I think it will be a good one for your needs

Thank you for reminding me of the “one small detail“ I left out. I will edit the original post, but, it is in the 308 Winchester.

Cool have fun with it, me I’m a 6.5 Creedmoor fan and I own both .308 and 6.5 Creedmoor maybe you will enjoy the .308 more than I did it’s a great cartridge just not for me

Don’t stress the vortex, the pst gen ii should work well,

I have a razor, a pst gen I, and a strike eagle, all got on good deals, all in service for several years and see hard use (competition)

if it breaks for ANY REASON call vortex and they will fix it, sucks if they break, but it’s nice to know if it breaks in 5 years they will take care of you

Thanks. I’m really not that worried. I’ve had several other of their products, and I have been very very happy with them. I work with enough tools and other products to know that everybody makes good ones and bad ones :)

Bed the rail to the action for full contact. I use car wax as release agent. Scuff the bottom of the rail with the drumroll on your dremel, a little car wax on the threads of the screws, apply JB Weld to rail. Stay 1/8" away from holes on base and 1/16" away from edges. Does not take much JB Weld. Let dry overnight. Remove base and trip. Carwax removes easily with carb cleaner.

Stock arrived yesterday. 72CD64AB-83FE-4670-85A0-5DD72D05C4DC.jpeg F89FB876-0E3F-4C89-AA92-CCEABCC51BE5.jpeg Very impressed with the MDT rail.
1CA6AD25-CCAC-4BEF-8098-CF2FD36D912D.jpeg Not done yet, but the free float is good “out of the box”.

I had some bedding compound I planned to use that evidently has went bad… the pillars are done pretty well, so I probably could be “ok” without… but… I’ve heard JB weld can work for that as well… any input?

I have used JB weld successfully on several, it works well. I am not an expert and there may be some purists along that disagree with my shadetree ways, so take that for what it's worth.

Nice looking stock! Happy with your color choice?

If you don't mind, could you post a couple of photos of the pillar bedding they did? I am about to order a stock from them and was on the fence about that option. Are they epoxied in, or just press fit?

36814982-2010-475F-B4E0-5992152E6C62.jpeg Definitely a press fit, but it looks like(doesn’t show well in photos) there is a clear epoxy residue around them. Possibly the coat them first? Dunno. My experience with the epoxy is tabletops. 80031B8A-C9B7-4003-8316-8EE72654EC43.jpeg 56D2398B-CA39-4209-BB5A-3296583F6202.jpeg 36814982-2010-475F-B4E0-5992152E6C62.jpeg I’ve made plenty of tables. But I’ve never made a gunstock :) @high country

What did you use for a release agent?

That looks like a clear coat to my grease monkey eyes, I stay away from the paint and body stuff lol. I'm not patient enough... Lol!

I’ve messed with enough stuff to be dangerous… framer/roofer/siding/decks etc for 8years… handyman for 20+(overlap in there and I’m still doing that some) mechanic assistant of and on… done quite a bit of small engine repair… now I work on water softeners and RO(reverse osmosis) systems… Jack of all trades, and might be good at something when I retire:rofl::rofl:

One of my cousins is a engineer for the Weld County Water District in north Colorado, so you and him probably have somewhat similar jobs! And my other cousin is a plumber who focuses on new installs mainly and does all kinds of cool stuff like in floor heating and driveway heating! He's out in the Salida area at the base of the Rockies. So it gets down right cold and snowy out there!

I'd love to read build details, please.

Host action, etc?

Thanks for posting those photos! I use clear shoe polish as a release. Works great.
No problem. I would prefer to see some thing epoxy myself, but it’s done very well for what it is in my opinion. To answer the question from your previous post, I am happy with the color choice. There is a part of me that would like to see a little bit more brown in with the colors there, but I’m not complaining. I think it looks pretty good.

CZ527 in MDT chassis, Glades Armory bolt handle (I Loctited the big Aluminum knob after making the video), no-nameo eBay linear compensator, Magpul buttstock and bipod, A2 grip and SB Tactical folding adapter. Scope is Nikon P300 in CZ factory rings.
