I went through the process of buying and selling parts off to make my first long range setup as cheap as possible to me so here's what it is.
I started off with a brand new Savage 11 Hunter XP for $414(for some reason I don't have a pic of everything brand new)

I removed the stock the barrel and the factory barrel lug. I sold the factory .308 barrel, stock, mag and scope.

I figured I'd just use my Vortex Crossfire 6-24x50 that was on my .22 trainer for a bit until I got a new scope.
I tossed up the options of a Choate tactical and a Bell and Carlson medalist but ultimately I didn't like the forend of the Medalist so I found a used Choate tactical used already duracoated for a decent price
I ordered a PTG .2OO recoil lug, a used(200rounds) factory .308 varmint barrel with load data, and McGowen trued barrel nut to put everything back together.
I knew that I needed a bottom metal and mag setup so I went with the AccurateMag setup because it was almost $100 cheaper than the CDI setup.BTW the fit and finish on this piece is amazing.
Since the recoil lug was CM and the barrel nut was stainless I had the recoil lug and the trued Mcgowen barrel nut cerakoted

Sight in day(we were all wearing hearing protection it's just in ear)

I had sighted in the gun with the Vortex Crossfire and it shot well but then about a week later I found a used Falcon Menace 5.5-25x50 with Vortex Tactical rings already on it. So here she is now. So far I love the scope and this is the first time using MILs so it was a learning process but I'm coming along. I plan on doing some sort of digital camo but not sure of colors yet

The process was cool because I didn't just buy a pre built gun but I do plan on shooting out to 1000yds comming as soon as June 7 but until then on my property I have up to 680yds to practice on

Here's my totals.
Savage model 11 Hunter XP $414
PTG Lug $34
McGowen trued barrel nut $30
Choate Tactical stock $280
AccurateMag bottom metal and 10rnd mag $212
Sharp Shooter Supply Competition Trigger $100
Falcon Menace 5.5-25x50 with Vortex Tactical rings $350
Sold these
Factory .308 barrel $69
Factory stock and mag $43
Factory Bushnel scope $50
for a grand total of $1258.

Beautiful ! What a nifty project !

Somehow, though, I think I'd lay off the camo idea. It looks great and functional "as is."

Maybe I missed it, but how'd you go about headspacing it? The Savage barrel nut system seems to be known for enhancing accuracy.

(I have long suspected this is because the barrel isn't torqued to umpteen dozen lb-ft while being threaded into the receiver, and therefore isn't stressed as much.)

Nice build but does seem to be a bit pricey when everything is totaled up. The stock looks great as is; post more photos if you do decide to go with a camo pattern paint job.

I agree it was more than I wanted to sorts but there really is nothing I NEED to upgrade. Essentially I ended up with an upgraded fcpk and shoot setup for the same cost.(minus threaded barrel)
It was head spaced using go no gauges.

Price looks reasonable to me. You've got a good scope, a really good aftermarket stock, an aftermarket trigger, and you've only got $1200ish in it. Looks good from here.

I was provided load info to 1/2moa but I won't know until I start loading myself but the barrel is the only thing I could do different and IF I do it will be a 24in Mcgowen
