I made my first five 45 acp cartridges today.

230 gr FMJ RN bullets with lead showing at base.
6.0 gr Alliant Unique
OAL 1.270
Taper Crimp 4.70 - 4.71
CCI 300 primers
Once fired closely inspected clean mixed brass.

They feed nicely and eject in both my Colt Defender and Rem R1S 1911's.

I only loaded 5 to see how they work out. They look pretty good to me.

They are flared, but I never thought of using the deburring tool I have. I'll do that now with a couple more and see.

Nice troops you made there Ccctennis and thanks rcmodel as usual. I like the deburred ones better yet.

Do you have a ridge on the case that you can feel with your fingernail? It sort of looks like you still have some flare left.

I made some 230gr RN and some 185gr wadcutters.. both with 800x!!

Yes slightly, but no more than this factory Federal Premium HP has. Maybe even a little less.

Went out back and shot a magazine full of these. No real recoil, fed and ejected nicely and they all went where I was aiming about 20 feet from target. I wasn't trying for bull's-eyes, just a two hand hold standing and put them all in a 6 inch circle in short order.

Very happy with the load and the 1911 is still pretty clean except the brass coating on the bullets left skid marks up the ramp and on the rifling. The flash here makes it look 10 times worse than it really is. Cases look good for another round of reloading too.

Good for you Sigsmoker! glad they popped right and welcome to "rolling your own"!

I do tend to talk kinda funny sometimes having had a grandmother of some Dutch German ancestry. "Throw your grandma down the steps, her slippers."

I did get closer to 20 feet of the target with my aim. LOL

Yeah, I am loading 280 more tonight!
Thanks everyone.

If anything, they look a bit over crimped, but pics lie sometimes.

They are at .470 and I am afraid to mess with the die to bring them up to .471 as they are coming out OK and shot OK. But that's a good eye!

If it works, I won't fix it I guess. Is there a good reason to take them up a notch?

only 280 to go?
That's only an hour's shooting.

I don't have any more primers left or I would do all 500. Gotta get to the LGS later this week.

I think you meant 185gr truncated cones, not wadcutters. Unless of course you just arent icturing the wadcutters.

sig,

Is it just me or are those coated bullets, not FMJ's? They look like coated bullets in your pics, in which case you may want to double check Alliant's website for recommended Unique loads for 230 gr LRN. They recommend 5.8 gr max at the same OAL that you're using. In any case, I agree with those who think they are over crimped. Looks almost like a roll crimp below the edge of the case mouth. Maybe it's the camera angle.

I think what you're seeing is just the product of a good camera and a bright flash. I know Remington makes (or previously made) some FMJ bullets with jackets that color. A good camera will pickup
things the naked eye normally misses, like lines caused by forming metal.

But they certainly could be coated.

Yes the bullets look almost frosted in the pictures but they are jacketed and appear more shiney in hand.
I did make a tiny adjustment to make these .471 taper crimped,
but they are .470 prior to the crimp adjustment. Pictures are hard to make with this camera.

Yeah, now seeing the pic of your dial caliper, I can see why the bullets look like coated LRN bullets in your OP. It wasn't the color that concerned me, just the finish. Sorry for the confusion. Glad they're working out for you.

As per Walkalong's post, they do look a little over-crimped. You seem to be checking just below the rim with the calipers instead of on the lip of the rim. The rim does look slightly turned out like the crimp caused it to flare.

Are you using a Lee FCD?

Perhaps we are seeing a glare or reflection from chamfer and deburring at the rim that makes it look so.
I'm using RCBS dies. Just checked with calipers, no diff at edge, no flaring out.

I don't even count the number of times I have loaded my .45 cases.
(OK I am bad, but I pick up and use range brass...don't sort either other than SP-LP)
My routine is
Splits in case mouth toss, real loose primer pocket=deprime live primer and toss. (if you are careful you can reuse the primer, wear safety glasses! but I have never had an isuue yet)
Sort of loose primer pocket mark with black sharpie toss after shooting,
load until one of the above occur.

Glad you loads are working for you. Enjoy.
