hey all, as promised, here's the range report

let me preface this thread with 1) i'm not a great shooter and 2) it was 0600. 3) not an official range, so this isn't an exact science. just me, dirt and the swivel bipod out there.

calm morning, about 85 degrees out and climbing. the range itself had a slight incline going up towards my targets and i paced them out to 100. list of specs on the rifle: http://thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=461863

first three shots were high and left(pic1), after that, the day only got better. when i did my part, the groups went submoa without a problem (pic2). this is the highest quality rifle i've ever shot, so i was pleased to see my previous range trips accuracy wasn't ALL my fault. mostly the mosins ;)

pic3 is the back of the box the targets were taped to, which shows all 25 shots taken today. pic4 is who came along (the glock didnt get to shoot though  )

tried two kinds of ammo, remington core lok at 150grain and winchester 180 grains. both shot well (being as it was only about 100yds) but i think i prefer the heavier winchesters.

solid shooting gun whose definate limitation is me as the shooter. with some more practice hopefully i'll shrink those groups and up the consistency. definately going to tone down that 7lb trigger though.

thanks thr!

Ha! Mosins are great for what they are, but punching one hole groups at any distance isn't their strong point!:D

Glad the new rifle's working out.

BTW-

Time after time it has been shown that the 30-06 prefers a 165 grain slug. Most decent '06's will find a 165 load of some sort that will stay 1 MOA all day long if the shooter does his part.....

So since you're just starting out wityh this gun, you may want to try a few in that weight.

its a .308 but i definately agree, 180 is a pretty beefy bullet. 150's and 160's seem more common, so i'll probably jump down to those here soon. 180 is just what walmart had

Oops. my bad. Didn't follow your link......

150's are a great choice in the 308 Win, and 180's are right at the top end of what you can get enough velocity out of.

When I owned my 700P I tried Federal Gold Medal Match (back in the day when it was affordable) Now - :what:

It is factory loaded with the 168 Sierra MatchKing and the rifle was very accurate with this factory ammo. My reloads with the same bullets resulted great accuracy too.

But first , if your trigger is 7lbs that is definitely going to hinder you in precision shooting. I would have it adjusted and if still not to your liking there are plenty of aftermarket options.
