Yup...got it covered. Nobody's gonna steal the coins from my sofa cushions. :D

This is a target I fired at the family farm using my M700 SPS varmint .223 Rem, with Police stock. The barrel's twist is 1-12. Distances were laser-ranged. I fired these groups across a plastic picnic cooler, using a 3" Harris bi-pod, and a 2" sandbag.

The sight-in group was fired at 100 yards and set 3.5" high. Then, I moved back to 288 yards and fired the remainder of groups with no cooling, and no cleaning. The ammo is Remington 45 grain HP. The best part is, the strings were fired (attempted) to be fired between 15 - 25 MPH wind gusts. The temp was in the upper 60s. I was attempting to replicate varmint hunting conditions.

Anyone who says that the Remington SPS line is junk, obviously had a lemon, or hasn't fired one...or two of them. By the time I fired the final round, I was dealing with some very serious heat distortion coming off that barrel! The scope being 36X didn't help there either. :)

Thats really good grouping for that range and wind with a .223, dont those light bullets get knocked around pretty bad in wind?

On a side note, I bought mine mostly to have a gun I could go to the range with, and then take out deer/hog hunting. It's heavier than a normal hunting rifle, but my other option was my mosin nagant or mauser, and those are not feather-weights either. I was hoping for 2" at 100, so the MOA I shot was better than I was expecting.

They absolutely would get pushed around a lot. I fired (as best I could) when the gusts died down.

You and I bought the Tactical in .308 Win for the same reason. It was my deer rifle last season. :) I wouldn't try mine on deer now with its 4 ounce trigger. These are awesome rifles!

Have you tried your Tactical using military ball? I am getting 0.25" to 0.50" with no wind gusts with mine and ball ammo. That was pre-4 ounce trigger. Can't wait to develop some handloads. Also, try some Black Hills ammo in it. The groups will shock you.

Nice shooting from everyone! My SPS Varmint in .223 is also an outstanding shooter - kedearian's target is really impressive!

I've owned a 700VS and a 700P both in .308 , the 700 SPS Tactical is the way I would go next time. I have the 20" barrel in a 700LTR in .223 and it is my most accurate rifle ever.

I’m not much for punching paper for groups sizes beyond finding what works for the given rifle. This is how I practice for varmint hunting. I set my steel targets at 288 to 300 yards. I use the small steel for practicing head/neck shots. I use the larger steel for practicing body shots. I keep a paper target nearby so if my hit-ratio drops below 80% on the small targets, or drops below 90% hits on the larger target, I can fire a round into the paper and assess my POA to POI.

The dualing tree is designed for up to .30-06 Srpg, and the swinging target is designed for up to a .308 Win. The swinging target didn’t hold up so well. I had a life-size, swinging steel woodchuck target but it wore out. I need to get a new one for practicing out to 500 yards. The first picture is the M700 Police. Picture two shows the size of the dualing tree targets. Pictures 3 & 4 show both the size, and the ill-effects on the steel swinging target. May it rest in “pieces”. <<Psych!>>

I do have these on video clips of about 15 to 17 minutes each, so I can assess where the impacts are, how windy it was at the point of the shot.

Geno you got it to good, I live in a city and the only place I can goto shoot is a rifle range that is paper only, no reactive or steel targets, and only two of the firing lanes even go out to 200 yards. I think next time I'm out i'm going to try the 200 yards and see what happens. Though I dont want to shoot a deer more than 150-200 yards away anyways, to long of a walk.

And I have not gotten any of the military ball ammo, just the 150grain fiocchi and some 147grain winchester fmj stuff. I'm saving my brass in the hopes that i'll have room in the future to start reloading, but until then it's factory only for me.

No, we both got it bad. :( I live in a suburb <<stinks>>. My brother owns the family farm, but it's almost 3 hours north. I try to pack my tent, and stay a day or two when I go. I'm not teaching at the college this summer due to surgery last week. So, I plan to go shooting a whooooole lot more this summer. You ever get up Michigan way, PM me. I'll get you up to the farm for a blast-fest.

Here's the steel woodchuck target I would like to purchase (about 3/4 down the page):

To bad I'm down south in Florida, now I just need to make enough money to buy a few hundred acres in North Dakota/Montana area so I can shoot off my back porch like all the cool kids.
