Shane, I don't have any personal experience with the CMMGs. Their bargain bin guns (~$500) were pretty popular while they were available. I think that deal has come and gone though.

i'll PM some other suggestions

I actually meant the CMMG "regular", not their "bargain bin" ones for about $600, which I understand used different brands of lowers. The CMMGs come in at more expensive than Stags, but less than LMTs.

Full disclosure: I own a milspec LMT AR.

strat81 makes some good points. To be fair, "the chart" was never meant to declare one better than the other; rather, it simply compares the Colt Defense AR to other makers. LMT, Colt Defense, Sabre Defense, etc. are for those who want milspec. These 3 are as close to milspec that you're going to get without full auto.

Anyone who has spent time in the military knows that milspec doesn't mean "best." Do you want milspec? Here's some things to consider that aren't so hot about milspec:

A milspec AR is going to have a rough trigger. A civilian AR will have a better trigger. Some civilian ARs have outstanding match grade triggers.

The chrome lined bore will reduce your accuracy some, but the M4 or the civilian 16" barrel equivalent is not made to be a target rifle. A civilian match grade barrel will have greater accuracy than a milspec barrel.

So if you do buy a milspec AR, you will have an AR with a rough trigger and a barrel with "minute of terrorist" (2 or 3 MOA) accuracy.

strat81 gave good advice. A non milspec AR with a Bravo Company BCG or LMT BCG would be a damn good rifle. Buy one with a good non-milspec trigger and good non-milspec barrel.
