My AR was born this weekend

I received my AR "Kit" from Del-ton on Friday. I had ordered it on Monday after finally deciding what I wanted to build. Friendly, helpful customer service and quick shipping time. I got a 20" 5.56, A3 (flat-top) with 1x9 chrome-lined barrel, A2 flashhider, detachable carry handle,
I put it together on a Stag lower. Total build time was about an hour. Would have been a little less but the stinkin' trigger pin is a pain to line up sometimes.

I decided to go "basic" with this one, maybe optics in the future but no bells and whistles per se. Now to decide whether I want to build an M4gery or a Bull-barrel varminter next?

I did wipe the gun down with CLP last night (after I took the pic) and it did "equalize" the finish. What about the buttstock though? Can I wipe that down too so that it doesn't look so grey? Just wondering why black denim cloth, can't I just use a clean shop towel?

Very nice weapon. I was going to order a kit from Del-Ton until I ran across the Stag M4 uppers. I'll order from Del-Ton next time, though.

I see that you're already thinking about that next rifle, and I know your pain. EBR Disease is tough on a fella!

Looks like you did a good job - I think I need an 20" A3...

Suggest the varminter next - never could see the pros of an Mforgery with nothing to fill those barrel cuts. (Mine is a pencil thin barrel 16" )

Well done Secluded, what tools did you use to put your AR together? I'll be following soon, I have the lower and associated parts kit but am still trying to figure out what configuration to build, I have a hunch I may end up w/ a standard 20" like you.

The Stag stripped lower was $109 OTD, the 20" AR kit from Del-ton was $575 shipped ($560 +$15.00 S&H). I did get a few "extras" with the kit. Chrome lining in the barrel was $50.00 and the detachable carry handle was ~$75.00. You could go cheaper from other places but Del-ton got nothing but rave reviews from what I read. I can attest to the customer service, they were very helpful when I call, got my order too me quick, 5 days from order to my door (some places it's a 3-4 week wait), and my order was correct and complete. I'd order from them again.

As for tools.
- 1 large flat head screw-driver - to loosen the screw on the buttstock to remover the buffer tube from the stock.
- A punch to tap down a few roll pins,
- a little electrical tape on the reciever so I didn't scratch it with my....
- hammer while tapping roll pins.

What has to be shipped to a dealer and what can be shiped right to you?

My understanding is that every thing but the striped lower can be shiped straight to your house and the lower has to be sent to a FFL and then purchesed from him.

I want to do something like this but I think I may have to wait awhile untill I have enough disposable income.

The lower receiver is technically the firearm. It has the serial numbers and therefore must be purchased through a dealer. The kit contains everything but the lower so that can be shipped to your door.

I understand about the money part. I have a specific "play money credit card". I requested a limit of $700.00. Kinda funny having a platinum Visa with a $700.00 limit but that's what I got. I don't spend unless I can put it on that card. I try to pay it off after each purchase. I was able to purchase the lower at a gunshow last month. After paying the card off at the beginning of this month I could afford the kit. This way I can get firearms/ammo/supplies without having to dip into the "family" finances. Keeps me honest and the wife happy.

Secluded, sounds like you used tools you already had, that's a good way to save money, some of those AR tools can add up to big bucks. Must feel pretty good to be able to fire a rifle you assembled yourself. I joined AR15.com and a lot of guys there have good things to say about Del-Ton. I just placed an order by internet for 4 stag lowers. They have a good rep for quality and are forged milspec aluminum w/ hard anodizing, guys are saying they make the Rock River receivers as well. Eagle Firearms has 'em on sale for $84 ea./ 3 or more $80 apiece. My FFL should be getting them sometime this week, I already have a Bushie lower I've had from before the AWB and that'll be my first build. I hope mine turns out at nice as yours.

The Stag lowers are nice. Some folks don't care for the "deer head" logo but it doesn't matter to me. The lowers can be found online for around $89-$99 like you mentioned. I bought mine from a local gunshop owner who had them at a show. I don't mind paying a few dollars more to support him and being able to have it right then. There aren't too many FFL's around me that will recieve firearms for less than $30.00 to $40.00 for the transfer fee.

True on the transfer fees, that's why I bought four,the fourth one is for the FFL.
He's also one of the reasons I got the Stag, he had one he assembled together with a Colt SP1 upper. Nice looker, the finish was easily as nice as that on the Bushie and he had no problems w/ fit and function. I figure with the stag on there I can claim my AR is for hunting and sporting purposes.
