A few years ago I bought a new Maverick 88 from academy for $149.99 as my first shotgun. I am getting ready to buy a beretta auto so the maverick is becoming a dedicated H.D. gun instead of all around gun. I decided to add a couple little parts to it and have a little fun. I am confident in this gun as I can't get it to fail on me. I use it hard, I don't clean it and it does nothing but keep working.

I wanted some kind of ghost ring sights but by the time I bought them and had a smith drill and tap for the rear and silver soder the front, I'd be spending about as much as the gun. After searching for the sights I came across the Truglo ghost rings they make for turkey hunting. Probably not the best combat sights but at in the house ranges you don't really use them but at longer ranges they will come in handy and for $30 you can't go wrong. Only problem was they atached to a vent rib and I had a plain 18.5" barrel so I took out my 24" vent rib barrel I picked up used for $50 and Chopped her down to 18". I cleaned up the cut end with the dremmel and then gave it a coat of rustoleum camo black paint. Threw on a sling and ammo carrier and she is what you see today.

I figure the barrel a wash since I am going to sale or trade the old one so all in all I have about $215 with accessories. I know some one is going to chime in that I could of got a used 870 for that, but comparing a used gun and new gun is like apples and oranges. At the time the new 870 was right about 2/3 more than the price of the new maverick.

How did you measure the 18 inches?

Best way is take a wooden dowel rod mark it 18 inches and drop it down the barrel then mark on the part sticking out of the barrel and remove only that much.

I put a rod down the barrel with the bolt closed and made a mark at the end. It measured 24" so I subtracted 18" which ment I could cut 6" off. I marked a smidgen longer and cut. When I installed it back on the gun to check the length it measured 18 3/32"

Just from looking right now, the end of the barrel isn't square. You ought to fix that with a hand file and machinist's square. :)

I hope it isn't more than 3/32" out of square...... Virginian that response was great.:D

It's slightly longer at the top then the bottom but not much at all. The picture angle makes it look way off. I hope to pattern it this weekend to make sure it shoots o.k. The more I play with it the more I love those sights. They are actually really quick.

Looks like a good HD piece. :) I'm partial to reduced recoil slugs, myself.

Mav 88 was my first shotgun too. Now she's got four other 12 gauge siblings in the safe with her, but with the exception of deer season, she's the one I always take into the field. Looks pretty good.

Question: Why did you mount the front sight so far back?

Odnar I didn't realize the front sight screws in and doesn't "clip" on like the others I have seen. I am sure this is a little more secure but when I cut down my barrel I cut off the hole for the front bead. Luckily it had a middle bead so I put it in that hole. The gunsmith has my rock island right now so when I go pick it up I will have him drill and tap a hole at the front of the barrel.
