I visited my fifteen y.o. probation client at his home the other day at about 2pm. At about 4pm, he and another kid jumped a guy at the same place, beat him pretty bad and took his money. My client's now incarcerated. Here's the deal. What if he and his buddy had jumped me instead? It probably would've gone one of two ways:

(1) Both he and his underage accomplice would've been shot by me several times and likely been killed or severely wounded. I'd have lost my job for carrying. I'd have spent the next months or years of my life fighting various court battles.

or (2) they'd have gotten the better of me, taken my money and my gun and either killed me or beat me pretty bad.

My guy was actually arrested two days after the assault for possession of a handgun.

Ya know, this is what you call a no-win scenario.

I'm sure he was just underprivilaged, undereducated, and emotionally neglected, it wasn't his fault that he mugged the guy, society is to blame. As for his having a gun while awaiting trial.. well just goes to show you that all guns are evil and need further regulation to keep them out of the hands of childeren. It might have even been the guns fault that he did his criminal actions.

Is he going to big boy jail? or is he going to thug school?

The protocols for dealing with juveniles in some jurisdictions are really ridiculous and put probation officers in danger.

Well, if I were a probation officer, I might be allowed to carry - I dunno. I'm the kid's shrink.

I vote option A. In the great state of Michigan if 2 men approach you in a manner that you WITHOUT DOUBT feel will be life threating or cause great bodily harm to you or a another. YOu have the right to draw your weapon a fire until their aggresive behavior is stopped (if they should die in the process thats just unfortunate). And thanks to a new self defense bill, effective october 1st 2006, the hostile criminal thugs or their families cannot sue you for damages (you shot them while they were trying to beat or kill you)IF your shooting was justified. This is simple common sense self defense. In the PAST you actually could be sued by a criminal or family of, If you shot, even in self defense:cuss: Because then they couldnt continue to go out and be criminals. Thank god, the laws are now a little more in favor of the victims or would be victims of violent crime.

eh

i deal with f-ed up kids all the time.

very rarely will they accost an adult they actually know personally (as in direct interaction), espeically if the adult is associated with government.

still, it's best to keep your wits about ye and everyone will understand if you suddenly develop a leg condition that necessitates your carrying a cane.

cold steel makes quite a nice cane. i put a rubber foot on the end of mine to make it suitable for streetwalking. then take a few kendo lessons and you're legal to go in any state or city in the USA.

Thats why i picked a residential facility to be a counselor/therapist. I can only get done in by home-made shanks :)

If i did community based, i'd probably definately carry. Not even because of most of the kids, i can build rapport pretty quickly... mostly its the parents.

I was going to say that most of the thug kids i am in contact will not start something with the grass roots people they deal with on a daily basis. you become a human to them and they have a hard time attacking someone who has a name to them.

Secondly I know that none of the kids I have met would ever willing go against the system or its people as they learn young that the system will eat them up and not even burp if they step out of line. That is, they know if they shoot a cop, there are four hundred more cops going to find them and most likely kill them. A PO is just like a cop to them, someone who is just another face from the Police, most have no idea you are not a cop or at least a LEO, which you are, (are you a sworn officer) some are some are not. some are actually bailiffs, some are corrections, not sure where you fit.

Me, I'd rather be carried by 6 than judged by 12;) I just happen to be a mental health patient myself and am very good friends with my new case manager. Since I've been a patient for along time and she's fairly new I've been showing her the ropes. I told her to checkout her case's histories before agreeing to home visits. I'm currently trying to get her into shooting. Then I'm going to urge her to get a ccw permit.
I recommend an ASP extendable baton instead of a cane. They're light and easy to conceal.

Phenom,

Be sure to check on those extendable batons. You'd be surprised at how many localities prohibit them. I know it makes no sense.

I'm in Indiana, nothing is prohibited here as long as you're of age;) Anything that doesn't require a FFL I can buy right off of the enternet:p

I'm in Indiana too. Where did you find that info? That would make a big difference to me.

Hello Matheath,

Sounds to me your obsessing. If your carrying illegally for safety reasons then maybe you should make a career switch over to Juvenile Corrections, or to a behavioral heath service company. :)

Peace

I'm no expert, but is it legal/good form to be asking/talking about your clients on the interweb? No offense meant.

it's called "socialisation", and exactly what the shrink is there to help create. trust relationships can be "transferred" by those who have them to individuals who have not yet earned trust. social relationships are established this way. sadly, some kids have not developed this mechanism by the age of 15, and likely, never will.

good luck in your work. you have chosen a difficult job, and will burn out soon enough. if your degree is high enough, you can move into outpatient practice and treat disfunctional borderlines, instead. if not high enough, you could always work for domestic relations and watch divorcing parents bicker over money.

or, you could be a greeter at wal mart. it would be just as rewarding, perhaps.
