my colt custom shop commander

i had a bunch of work done on this gun last year at the Colt custom shop, it came back matte blue and i had wanted standard blue. so i cogitated on it for a while sent it back and just came back again. going shooting in an hour or 2 here ( local indoor range open till midnite) this gun started life as a 1991 billboard commander. i had colts sell me a new slide & barrel, put in a short steel trigger, steel MSH, novak nite sights, hand fit slide, and lower and flare ejection port, tune for reliability. bevel the mag well and add colt cup style front strap serrations. changed out for XSE style hammer and beavertail. im super in love with this gun. if you have the patience, i highly reccomend the Colt custom shop. very affordable for the work they do. the slide is unique. its a got a nice rollmark and the prancing pony towards the rear and slanted serrations, but no forward serrations.

8 months or so last year. 1 month for the re-blue

Very nice! It has a certain customized appearence about it but in a rather understated way. Hope it shoots as good as it looks.

That is a very nice looking commander. It has a nice clean look to it which I also like in my custom jobs.

Although I prefer the old-school vertical serations myself, that is a perfect example of what a "business only" Commander should look like!

Great looking piece, but I have to ask - when exactly did you send it in last year? I'm sorry to hijack, but I sent one in (70 repro) last September and there is no word on when I can even expect it back.

But, if it turns out as well as yours, it will be worth it. Congrats!

They charged my cc for the work in march and I got it back 8 months to the day later. They usually run 6+ months on custom jobs. I think mine was longer as I specified I did not want a 100 year rollmark on the slide. I forgot it also has a national match barrel fitted as well. Call and ask for Brent in the custom shop he's the manager and will give you his work email address very good guy.

The reblue was no cost and was about 45 days door to door. Them standing behind their work was what made me decide to have a full size back there now getting similar treatment except I specified no beavertail and a I wanted a traditional spur hammer. Also I decided to get it finished in royal blue. Also gold bead sight and black outline rear. On top of the steel parts and custom shop fitting and tuning. I just learned to make sure everything is 100 percent specified as I don't want to waste their time or mine sending it back. One nice touch I found out they will do is if u get a NM barrel fitted they will serial number that barrel to the gun. Like a some of the euro gunmakers do or used to do. I think I will get that done on the full size.

Check the colts website for the custom shop catalogue. They have standard packages but you can also get ala carte ietms added. From mild to wild. Depends on your wallet. One thing I would like to do some day is some custom engraving at the factory. But I can't afford it now. Maybe my initials on a piece I know I will never sell.

I think the 1991 billboard colts represent a great value in used guns as a base for a custom piece. Most people think they are not that attractice a rollmark (myself included). I got into this gun used and cheap and sold the old slide and barrell assembly to offset the cost. I'm all in to this gun for between 1k and 1.1k.


Already dreaming up my next project. Maybe later this year or next depending on cash flow....

I might have to check with them--I had a 1970 or so LW Commander for a work gun way back when and liked it very much. The frame cracked at the dust cover, and although I found a new frame for it it never ran right after that.

The new LW Commanders have too much useless bling to suit me--all I want is a stock working gun with old time hammer, grip safety, and thumb safety. OK, so my old gun had ivories--that I could go for!
