Well after about 10 years of pretty constant use my Dillon's tumbler is dead. I've read a lot of pros and cons on the various boards and ratings on some of the online merchants web sites and have narrowed my search down to one of the following tumblers.

1. Dillon's CV-2001
2. Thumler's Tumbler Ultra-Vibe 18

Any others I should consider? It seems like lately my tumbler has been running about 4 to 5 hours daily.

Has anyone had one found a source for replacement motors that will work on the older CV-500's? Dillon said they would replace the motor in mine for $100+ plus shipping to and from Dillon (in other words, buy a new one). They said the motors have been changed and the new ones won't fit in the CV-500 but they could modify it so the new one will fit.

Thanks!

Why not just pull the motor and take it to an alternator shop to see if they can rebuild it? If that can't be done then just buy another one. I have the Cabelas and have been pretty happy with it.

That's a good idea. Thanks.

do you have a harbor freight near you? they sell tumblers for cleaning auto parts...same thing as tumblers for brass just different name. the one here even has one that has an 18# media capacity. Nothing else they sell 24#s of media for $25

I have two Ultra-Vib 18's, plus a Berry's tumbler. I had to replace the motor on one of the UV-18's after about 20+ years of use, and I use all three of my tumblers constantly. In fact, all three are running right now.

Grainger's sells appropriate motors that will fit in tumblers. You might look there. Or you can buy a Berry's tumbler, along with the media separator: http://www.berrysmfg.com/product-i14545-c47-g8-b0-p0-Brass_Cleaning_Kits.aspx or just the tumbler itself: http://www.berrysmfg.com/product-i14546-c47-g8-b0-p0-400_Tumbler.aspx

I believe shipping is included in the price, but check to make sure.

Hope this helps.

I had the same Dillon die on me about 6 months ago. I replaced it with a Cabela's tumbler and I'm very happy with it. It's powerful and it produces very little noise.

Any motor will work, from a box fan, small vacuum cleaner, etc.
You just need to attach a weight to make it wobble.
Take the cover off and you will see how simple it is, and you might be able to use the weight from the old motor.
What have you got to loose...You can't break it, it's already broken.

Check the connections

I have had several crimp connectors fail on my tumblers, so check for continuity all the way. I would hope tumbler motors would have heavier bearings, but they may not due to low bid production. Rewinding small motors is usually impossible due to fused motor frames, just throw away.

Vacuum motors may overheat. If you can get a motor that has a continous duty cycle that would be better. RPM being similar might be a nice touch.

The Berry's (Cabelas) tend to have motors go out sooner rather than later. Be it electrical or a bearing problem

I just had my CV-500 crap out and I fixed it! The problem with mine was the thermo switch stuck open and would no longer supply voltage to the windings. If you can find someone who rebuilds small motors the can rewind the motor if need be. If anyone has a older CV-500 with the old motor inn it they would like to sell I would like to buy it if the price is reasonable and the plastic is not all torn up.
