Yesterday my girlfriend and I went to the Nations Gun Show in Chantilly Virginia looking to buy an affordable handgun. I found an army fellow there walking around with a SIG p6 9mm he was trying to sell so I offered $350 for it. He took the offer and I got the pistol, 2 mags, and a holster. Shortly after the transaction, a man who witnessed the sale approached me and asked my age (I am 18 but look a bit younger). I told him i'm 18 and he told me that I must be 21 to buy a handgun, and I told him how that only applies to buying from an FFL licensed dealer and I just got mine by a private sale. He kept insisting that you have to be 21 to even have a handgun at all and proceeded to ask a group of old guys behind one of the stands and they all agreed with him and told me that I better find that guy I bought it from and return the gun before I go to jail. I told them that I know it was legal because I looked up the law and they all just laughed at me and claimed that I have no idea what i'm talking about, being a bunch of arrogant jerks to me. So me and my girlfriend just walk away from them and then she looks back to see them talking to state troopers and pointing at us. So the police come up to us and I told them exactly what happened, and thankfully the police were nice and respectful to us and said they wern't sure either so they made us wait there with them for half an hour while they were looking up the law until one of them returned saying we are good to go. So being rather relieved I got to walk out and take my girlfriend to the shooting range with the new little 9mm :D

I've been wanting for us to return to VA to raise my son there, but it's stories like this that are making me reconsider.

Dealers #1 "My God, see the deal that kid got?"
Dealer #2 "Tell him it's illegal and he has to return it to the seller".
Dealer #1 "Then we offer $375, right??? Good plan."

Interesting gun laws in VA, in my part of the woods you have to be 21 to purchase a handgun.

VA also sells handgun ammunition to 18 year olds? Different states, different laws.

So, do you realize your mistake? Did you learn your lesson?

In this society divulging personal information to people with unknown intent is almost always a mistake. Personal includes your age. It's considered a rude question for a reason.

The proper answer to any question like that is, "Are you propositioning me?"

I congratulate you for knowing what was right and standing up for your rights.

Hopefully you informed the guys that told you were wrong with what happened and presented them with some new light.

Many might think that was working the fringes of the law, but the law is the law.

Yep

It's kinda disappointing (but not surprising) that state troopers didn't know the age for possession of firearms in VA is 18. The fact that they bothered to go look it rather than making up something on the spot is reassuring though.

Dang. If you want to be a cop, go join! I see the recruiting ads all the time.

Do these guys hang around the theater box office making sure no 16-year-olds see R-rated movies, too?

A nation where it becaomes a crime to mind your own business...MAN,where I come from ;Rats are a dying breed.

and proceeded to ask a group of old guys behind one of the stands

Was it the beef jerkey, crappy flattened penny jewelry, Pakistani knife, or Nazi crap stand?:p

No, it was the Sham-Wow.

Dang ha I just went to the Fairbanks,Alaska gun show yesterday and today and really wanted to buy something..but was kind of unsure what the response would be when I went for it.I am 20, and the law says I can own handguns, even carry just not concealed. I have a handgun, and wanted another as well but just didn't want to go through any hassle.

I wish the law was cleara and concise, but unfortunately it's not..

Um, ya, one would think that State Troopers working a =GUN SHOW= would be a little more "up to snuff" on firearms laws.

No, the proper response is "How is that in any way your business?" as you walk away.
