I need advice on buying an AK; I think I'm going to get a Polish under folder made by Lancaster. I'd like to know if I should get 1mm or 1.6mm.

The reason I'm getting an under folder is because I want a compact AK and I don't like side folders.

I'm open to suggestions about the manufacturers.

If given the choice, the thicker receiver is a bonus. It'll be stronger and flex less during firing. That increases accuracy and decreases wear. I have no experience with Lancaster, but I've heard good comments on them. Good luck and let us know what you end up with!

Yea, Im also under the impression that if you have a milled or thicker reciever like an RPK it will most likely be a bit more accurate then the average stamped reciever. I wouldn't worry about the life of the reciever, as long as its been heat treated properly it will almost certainly last longer then you.

What about the barrel? Is it chrome lined?

You want something thats compact and you don't like side folders which is a personal preference. Bear in mind the underfolders are a bit uncomfortable on the shoulder unless you pad it, more so with a cheek weld when you actually use the sights. And I have never seen an optics rail on a underfolder so if you want to go with a reddot sight you will most likely have to mount it forward on the upper handguard or rear sight base.

I'm not really worried about the accuracy of the gun, I have a Colt AR-15 and it shoots much better than I can.

Yes, the barrel is chrome lined on the polish AK.

I prefer iron sights to optics.

whats got u turned off about side-folders?

I hear that the romanian wire folders can take a beating and even absorb a little recoil...

but u gotta admit... an underfolder looks totally awesome on an AK

I havent heard hardly anything about polish aks... but there is alot of good word in those bulgarian aks

Good luck!
and let us know how she bangs when u get it!

Definatly the thicker receiver.

I'll admit I prefer the look of an underfolder, but with a sidefolder you can run a drum mag. ...iffin you wanted to. :)

Compare the weight

I have a VEPR with a RPK reciever and I love it, but it is heavy. I got it used because the previous owner couldn't stand the weight and Mrs. Holtz won't use it because of the weight. It is accurate, but the available ammo holds it back.

I have a WASR-10 double-stack. My understanding is that it is the 1mm, not the 1.6mm. If I had been able to locate one, I would have bought the milled receivers, or at least a 1.6mm receiver. I bought the WAR-10 because it was what was available in my area.

Whatever you get, check it for smoothness before you buy it. Mine was fairly smooth, and it smoothed considerably with manipulating the action hundreds of times manually. Since I do not intend to fire mine thousands of rounds each month, ever each year, the fact that it is light-weight is less of a concern to me.

Depending on how much you intend to use yours, you may want to go for the heavier version. Also, mine is a fixed stock...bad choice on my part, but underfold, side folds were not allowed in Michigan because they were 29.5", and 30" is the minium legal here. Good luck and enjoy it. Mine is so much fun to fire...low recoil.

I held a sidefolder once but it felt terrible for some reason.

Yes the underfolders definitely look good.

I don't really want a drum magazine, so the underfolder would work.:)

I don't mind the weight, I just want the most reliable and durable rifle I can get...

I'm afraid I don't have that option, none of the gun shops in the area stock AKs.

I doubt I fire it that much, probably a few hundred rounds a month for practice.

I built a Polish underfolder on a Marshall reciever. As far as AKs go the Polish variants seem to be of much higher quality that the WASRs, Yugos, Maks, and Maadis I have handled.

Does your AK have a 1mm or 1.6mm receiver?
