I bought a NIB 12 ga. 870 with a black synthetic stock, 28" VR barrel, black parkerized type finish. Anyway, right out of the box after cleaning of course, it was patterning way right and low. So I thought maybe it's just something with the choke tube, so I put a different choke tube in it and it still patterned the same. So since I have quite a few 870's laying around, I switched barrels and it patterned just fine. I put the suspect barrel on one of my other 870's, and it did the same thing, low and right.

I'm really disappointed, I've never had any problems with an 870. I guess their quality just isn't what it used to be. Anyone else had a similar problem with an 870 barrel?

Remington has been good to me concerning this though. They have agreed to replace the shotgun, so no problem there at least.

So, a bad barrel got through; you come on here and rant and whine - basically slamming the entire company and their products; but they are taking care of the issue..........

Do you do the same when GM or other has a recall?

They are cranking out guns as fast as they can because WE, the buying public, DEMAND them. An OOPS, now and again is bound to happen. They are correcting the issue - maybe, instead of a negative whine, you should make this a positive about their customer service - the Ruger/Mossberg/S&W/fill-in-the-blank fanboys do it all the time

Maybe your barrel was made on a Friday just before happy hour...who knows, at least they're fixing the issue. I'm glad to hear their customer service department owned up to a fault on their end vs. blowing it off like I've heard them do with their 1911s.

I'm confused.

I don't see a rant or rave, just someone sharing an experience.

I'm with you on this one. Never entered my mind to consider this a "rant" or "whine".......

ETA...BTW, welcome to the Forum :)

Kudos to Gamestalker for...

1. Pursuing the issue with Remington first, and then sharing the outcome. This is a breath of fresh air compare to many THR folks that post first to vent and then never post the outcome.

2. Obtaining a good outcome. "Effective complaining" is not difficult but is a skill that requires self-control, rather than bluster.

3. It would be good to know if anyone else has had a similar issue with 870 barrels. Thanks for raising the question.

Same question the OP asked.

I'd like to hear if anyone has had a similar experience, too.

You have several 870s and only one has been a problem, try a certain laptop brand. Every one I have had of this particular brand is a lemon. Try replacing 4 hard drives within a year on each one. Try a company that claims that a state's lemon law does not apply to them and instead on replacing it they are going to repair it again. Imagine if you had to tell the company that they would be hearing from the State Attorney General's Office Consumer Services Division before they decide to replace the lemon. You don't have a thing to complain about with that 870 since Remington is doing right by you.

First, flat black is not a Parkerized, or even Parkerized type finish, by a mile. Check it out on Wikipedia.
I have never seen the issue, but with over 10 million made and going strong I am positive they have had more than one with the issue. And I am also pretty sure they took care of those too, if they got the opportunity. I sold an 11-87 Premier in about 1988 and it shot over a foot to one side, and they sent me a new barrel pronto. I sold a Browning that shot two feet high, and they sent me a new barrel AFTER I went thru the usual process of convincing Browning that I was not an idiot to be having any issue with one of their revered products. I sold a Winchester that had no firing pin. Stuff happens.
I saw a guy have the barrel lug come loose from the barrel when he attached it to a brand new Mossberg 500. What do you think I ought to do he asked. Call Mossberg I said. Do you think I could yada yada yada ? he went on. You can do anything you want to, but if you bugger something up with kitchen table gunsmithing don't come back whining about Mossberg wouldn't fix it I replied. He finally shut up and did call them, and they sent him a new barrel. But he never did feel right about it after than, and finally got an Express which he raves about. Not that it is one bit better overall in my opinion, just different.

Maybe your barrel was made on a Friday just before happy hour...
Or may be your barrel was made on a Monday before the work crew recovered from Saturday night...
Or may be your barrel was stepped on by a camel on Humpday...

Still, the first pattern test on a shotgun barrel should not be the consumer, even with a good return policy.

I recently bought a NIB 870 with an 18.5" barrel that had a sight canted way left(which I didn't notice until I got it home :banghead: )
I never did find out what the actual issue was but Remington did quickly fix the problem.

Thanks Gamestalker for sharing your experience with us. It reminds me that patterning a new shotgun should be on of the first things to verify proper performance characteristics. I don't think your information was a rant, and I appreciate you taking the time to ahre it with us here. I hope Remington does you right on it, and the replacement shotgun works out fine.

"Rant and whine" -- where did the OP do that? Make it a positive -- really!?

Wow! The stereotypical "defend the decline of Remington at all costs" fan-atic.

I think he told his story very calmly. Sure, I was thinking "of course you are having a problem with a new 870..." but I have lot of experience with them.

Ranting and raving?
Oh well, no harm, no foul, this is THR

No, I'm actually very pleased with how well they are handling this for me. After many years of buying their firearms, I have nothing but good things to say about their products, 870's for sure!

I've got an old "Sportsmen 12", I think that's whats stamped on the receiver. It was actually the bottom shelf 870 when I bought it new back in the 1980's for around $160. That 870 has had more use and abuse than you could imagine. It has lived through all 6 of my kids, which includes being dropped a few times I'm sure, and it's still slick as silk. It was also the shotgun I would let turkey hunting clients use, so it got dropped, and generally abused, time, and time again over the years. It's ugly, but it's just as reliable as the day I bought it. So the only thing I will rant and rave about, is how well they're built, robust, and 100% reliable the 870 is.

-1 for Remington sending that out the door.

+1 for Remington fixing it.

so we're left with Remington in good standing.

thanks for sharing. have never encountered that with my 870s, but have had other problems. nice to know Remington has quality customer service.

You get a lemon (which happens with any mass produced item) and make a sweeping generalization about the overall quality of all 870s produced today?

Remington does not pattern barrels or even test fire shotguns. No need for it and the cost would be passed on to the buyer. I purchase over a thousand barrels a year and have seen every kind of flaw in them. Canted pedestals, crooked vent ribs, barrel rings braised in wrong positions and about any other issue you can think off. As others have stated these are mass productions items and there will be issues. It is how a company responds to the issue that matters.

Of further note is the fact that after the first election of the current POTUS there was a run on guns and what followed was some of the worst QC I have witnessed in my 60 years of life. Pressure from Distributors and customers to get these guns out was reflected in the increased production and horrible QC from many manufacturers. I predicted this was going to occur again and stated that I would not buy a new weapon untill the dust settled and production and QC got back to pre gun run standards. Not sure when that will be but I will wait.

I also commend the OP for an excellent post. He identified an issue correctly, stated how it was being resloved and did so factually and accurate with no malice towards the manufacturer.

Inspite of the above I did purchase one weapon since December for my own use. But it came from CMP and I have 100% confidence in them. An M1 Garand in .308. Wow, I am in love.

Have you thought of or tried to call Customer Service and explain your peoblem? I`d try the easy route first.
I'm beginning to wonder if everyone is actually reading the thread or just seeing yet another "870 problem" thread and some just have a knee-jerk-reaction to attack the OP...

That's certainly not High Road.

I'm beginning to wonder if everyone is actually reading the thread...

Perhaps not unlike a conversation, where many folks are too caught up in thinking about what they want to say rather than listening to what's being said.

So what could be wrong with the barrel that would cause it to shoot off to the side? A slight bend in the barrel?

The issue is most likely the threading of the end of the barrel is not centered and is slightly off. That may be why no matter which choke tube he tried he got the same bad result of low and to the right.
