My first gun, I need advice on ammo

One more piece of sage advice: If little Susy Snedecker shows up in your site picture brandishing a an Easter bonnet and fluffy white bunny disengage immediately and reevaluate the situation. She may have crawled into your dog door in search of Wonderland after watching some fantastical Disney adventure on TV. The possibilities are endless, and you definitely want to be in fear of your own survival before jeopardizing that of another.

I handload all my practice ammo and for the most part shoot .38 spl for practice and occasional magnums for fun.

For defense use I have my K frames loaded with Remington 125gr Golden Saber or Speer Gold Dot JHP's. I find the Remington Golden Sabers to be good moderate .357 mag load, much more punch than any .38 spl but not the full power 1,450 fps loading of the Speer Gold Dots.

Do a search on Extreme Shock, MagSafe, Glaser. And break out the popcorn.

If you'd prefer the Cliff Notes version, no worries. Crap. On toast.

The .38 Spl has over 100 years of use in various applications; the .357 Mag has about 75 years worth.

No credible LEA uses frangible ammo.

There is a reason for that. There are any number of reliable, effective loads in both .38Spl and .357 Mag.

Frangible ammo was developed for close quarters combat drills, and other types of practice to reduce the likelihood of ricochet and to keep the drill environment from being destroyed. Not to say it won't do the job... it may, but is not usually designed for defense.

There are rifle rounds meant for hunting small thin skinned game that are basically frangible. They do massive amounts of damage, but they are traveling 3 or 4 times faster as well. With a pistol I just don't think the potential is there for the same type of devastation.

Personally I just don't see the point. Everyone thinks cops use HP ammo for "safety" which is a load of crap. They don't use them because hey don't over penetrate. They use them because they create larger wound channels and transfer more energy to the target. Bottom line is they deliver a greater amount of physiological & psychological trauma to the target.

FMJ ammo kills things dead too, but usually takes longer to bleed out, and or makes complete pass throughs without doing enough damage to put something down.

Frangible ammo actually performs different on different surfaces. Some frangible ammo will penetrate and not explode in gelatin for instance. Still it is just silly to take your chances. I would use FMJ before I would use frangible.
