Frangible ammo was developed for close quarters combat drills, and other types of practice to reduce the likelihood of ricochet and to keep the drill environment from being destroyed. Not to say it won't do the job... it may, but is not usually designed for defense.
There are rifle rounds meant for hunting small thin skinned game that are basically frangible. They do massive amounts of damage, but they are traveling 3 or 4 times faster as well. With a pistol I just don't think the potential is there for the same type of devastation.
Personally I just don't see the point. Everyone thinks cops use HP ammo for "safety" which is a load of crap. They don't use them because hey don't over penetrate. They use them because they create larger wound channels and transfer more energy to the target. Bottom line is they deliver a greater amount of physiological & psychological trauma to the target.
FMJ ammo kills things dead too, but usually takes longer to bleed out, and or makes complete pass throughs without doing enough damage to put something down.
Frangible ammo actually performs different on different surfaces. Some frangible ammo will penetrate and not explode in gelatin for instance. Still it is just silly to take your chances. I would use FMJ before I would use frangible.
