First a little background on why. Last weekend my son and I put together a couple of basic Personal Survival Kits for ourselves to carry on our woods bumming trips.Since I am cheap we did it with the least amount of cash spent. When it came to knives I let him add a Vic Recruit to his kit ($12) and I threw a Camillus TL-29 ($8) in mine.

What I really wanted for mine was a decent, yet cheap, fixed blade. Yes I know a Mora comes to mind but I like instant gratification and no shops around carry them.

So after checking out many imported mystery steel knives at the local chain stores I just gave up.Then I found this...

A Kabar carbon steel skinner with a 4 1/2" blade and almost 4" cutting edge for about $15 with tax.

Two problems, the blade profile isn't what I wanted and Ct law says 4" or larger cutting edge is a major no-no. So not liking the blade profile and not wanting a felony based on how someone holds the tape I turned this ..

Into this..

Not a major change but a little time spent with a file and stone gave me just wanted. A cheap carbon steel bushcraft knife with a legal 3 7/8" cutting edge.

Now my next chore is making a better sheath for it.:)

Looks pretty good to me! Old American-made carbon steel knives rock! I picked up an old Schrade a while back for 20 bucks. Sharpest knife I own, despite being the oldest.
