My First Randall

Good for you! Randalls are an iconic addiction of being an American knife addict. There should be at least one in every collection.

Cheers,

ts

Excellent choice for an all around knife IMHO. I carried the 8" version to war in Vietnam. My CHP son has it now, still serving (for camping) him. Glad to see it is the 01 steel version, nothing better IMHO.

Randall knives are among the best made. Whoever bought it didn't make a great deal. There is a knife shop that has it in stock and is selling it for $550. At least the fellow didn't pay twice that much as I've seen others do.

The "fellow" is the OP, who said he bought it.

Glad I got my 1969'ish 7" #1 at a gun show about 5 years ago!
I don't know what was wrong with that guy that had it laying on his table for $175!

Darn, why can't I ever come across deals like that. Congrats.

Jeep,
I bought it for $565 shipped. Seems fair to me but everyone is entitled to their opinion of value.
Not sure what you are trying to say. I paid $565 and your local shop has it for $550. Mine is in new condition. So what is your point?

Sorry you misunderstood. My point was that usually in auctions folks end up paying more than they might get the item from a dealer. I've seen Randalls for for double what you could get them for from Randall itself. And we're not talking any special here.

Most people are willing to pay a premium to get a Randall "now" rather than wait more than a year to get it from Randall. There are a couple Randall's I would like to own, but I am not going to get in line with a factory order.

Nice knife. I have the #15 Airman which is the same sort of fighter.

Fantastic tool, I hope you actually USE it. I know people who own Randall's who don't. They are afraid that they might scratch it so it sits in the safe all the time except when they take it out to show it to people.

Owen,
Great point. I am in the process of acquiring four different models. The one listed in this thread and:
1. Randall Knife Model 28 WOODSMAN
2. Randall #2-5 boot knife
3. Randall (Not Vietnam) #18-7 1/2" ATTACK fighting knife. "5th special forces" etched on back of blade.
# 2 & 3 are a done deal. I am still working on #1.
I expect to use two of them as tools and save the other two for my grandsons when they are old enough.

The thing with any given Randall is not what was paid, what it was perceived to be worth or what anyone else thinks it's worth but rather - was that knife which was available at that time to that particular buyer worth it to the buyer. All that being said, I have never known of a single Randall buyer (among several dozens of buyers) to feel that they had ever "over-paid."

Good for you OP. Now the tough decisions come... Do you use it without care as the designer had originally hoped and as GORDON did or do you just take it out from time to time to look at it and to appreciate its beauty?

Me? I'm hopin' you use the hell outa it to the dismay of the polishers out there.:D

Todd,
It is an interesting thought process. When I bought the first one I thought that I would put it in my safe and see if it appreciates in value over the next 5-10 years. As the time approaches for delivery of the knife/knives, I reflect on how gratifying it is to pull a good knife out of my pocket or out of a sheath and use it for its intended purpose. I live on 15 acres and use a knife every day for some purpose. I can only imagine the gratification of pulling out one of my Randalls as I do my chores around here and admire the craftmanship of the knife. I know I will use and carry the Boot knife. I haven't yet decided on the other model which will be used. Heck they may all be used. As mentioned in an earlier post, I have two grandsons and each will get one at the right age (like 80:D)

Yup... While there's a lot to be said for an item, be it a Randall, S&W, Buick GS, Harley XR1000... whatever, presenting as factory fresh regardless of the age, there's quite a lot to be said as well for the same item showing signs of honest wear and care by an appreciative owner. I have a couple of customs that are in pairs of perfect and as carried in the Army - doncha know it's the carried ones I love to pull out and show off. Hell's bells, a fella can always show a photo or catalog of the "perfect" ones.

I certainly don't want to come off too preachy though as I'm carrying more than my fair share guilt in withholding items from potential users due to my own safe/trailer queeniness.

I think the OP got a good deal. Randall's are gettin' good prices now. I've had at least one since the late 80's and have used them all, except one. I have a new #1 coming next year, I chose to order it and wait. I can't wait ... The one I never used is a #14 Attack and I'm selling it on eBay. It's selling and hopefully the new owner will use it. I like the #1 for it's size and feel with the 7" blade. The one in this post is very nice..Congrats.

That is a nice looking Randall!

I have a couple of Randall knives, but the one that gets the most use is my Model 5 with a 5" carbon steel blade and leather handle. I had it made with a brass double hilt, so it looks very similar to your Model 1, with the exception of the small scalloped area on the back of the blade in front of the hilt:

22-rimfire, What models, I know a place.

The one I would really like to own is the Jack Crider smachet blade. I believe that is the right word... It looks like a short sword that you might see Frodo carry from the Tolkin books. Last I noticed, they were selling for $600+ and that is beyond my price range.

One of my favorites is the regular Jack Crider Special which I own (shorter version).

So many blades and so little money....

I recently purchased a Dozier blade (at Blade) that I am probably going to use. Yeah, it's a tough decision for me. I just love the thing. It's a K-42 with Blue G-10 handles and a 2.5" Sheepsfoot blade in CPM 154 versus D2. Dozier calls it one of the "Personals" which are meant for EDC. Been carrying it to see if I can get used to an exposed fixed blade for EDC.

Nice Randall.

The number one is a classic, all American design. Been carried everywhere.

I don't know what is popular in the military now, but a Vietnam Vet bud of mine said that back then "every Infantry Officer" carried a Randall.

It came in the mail today. It is an incredible piece of work. I am very, very pleased. Wish I knew how to post pics. I'll re-read the instructions on how to post pics and try to get a few up.
Thanks for all the kind comments,
Jim
