for you guys info only.

chronographed some 30-06 garand loads today.

1st load:

rp brass trimmed to 2.492
win 147g fmjbt
46.4g h4895
o.a.l 3.295
cci lr primers

this load was "so-so" accurate and came in at 2690 avg fps over 36rds checked

2nd load:

rp brass trimmed to 2.492
win 147g fmjbt
45.4g h4895
o.a.l 3.295
cci lr primers

little better accuracy and checked in at 2620 avg fps over 36 rds

3rd load:

lc brass trimmed to 2.492
win 147g fmjbt
46.4g h4895
o.a.l 3.295
cci lr primers

accuracy same as above and came in at 2760 fps over 36rds checked

4th load:

lc brass trimmed to 2.492
win 147g fmjbt
45.4g h4895
o.a.l 3.295
cci lr primers

the 4th loads produced the best accuracy of the 4 and checked in at 2680 fps over 36rds checked. (had quite a few baseball sized 8rd groups @100yds)

i couldnt help noticing that the velocities were higher with the lc brass. i really expected this due to the decreased available capacity of the lc brass because its demilled surplus, and quite a bit heavier walled, but i really didnt expect it to be that much.

i also noticed that the velocities were more consistant when using the light (45.4) charges. for some reason i think my powder measure is just more consistant there. wierd:confused::confused:

anyway, just thought i would post my findings with these loads.

heres what i shot them with, a 1944 era springfield m1 garand.

H4895 or IMR4895 seems like the go to powder when loading for the Garand. However with a good barrel, you should achieve better accuracy than "baseball sized groups." I have gotten good groups using IMR4064 and have been playing with Hodgdon's Varget lately which so far shows potential for excellent groups. Give Varget a shot if you can find some. :)
